Summary: Katie speaks to Chris after his revelation about the malpractice suit against Reid.

“What was that all about?” said Katie after she yanked Chris into an empty examination room.

“What? About your roomie being sued for malpractice?” asked Chris.

“No, about you trying to embarrass him about it by telling me in front of him,” said Katie.

“How was I supposed to know that he hadn’t told you about it? I thought the two of you shared the secrets of your souls with one another,” shrugged Chris.

“You’re being disingenuous. You know full well that Reid isn’t the type of man to share his problems with people.”

“Yeah, because he’s so perfect and wonderful and he’d be a much better son than I would.”

“What?!? Who said anything about him being a better son than you? Projecting much, are you?”

“Look, I’m sick of the guy, okay? No one sees him for the jerk that he is.”

“I’m pretty sure that EVERYONE sees him for the jerk that he is. Along with the Great Wall of China, his jerkiness can be seen from the moon. A few, lucky people also see him for the good person that he is underneath that jerkiness. I’m one of those people and you tried to change that,” said Katie.

“Maybe a few people are deluded into believing that there’s a good person underneath that jerkiness but I know what type of man he really is,” huffed Chris.

“Yeah, and you don’t mind telling everyone about him do you?” asked Katie.

“What are you talking about?” asked Chris.

“You couldn’t wait to tell everyone that he was gay,” accused Katie.

“So? He is gay and you already knew, anyway,” defended Chris.

“Yes, but you didn’t know I knew. There’s still gay-bashing and there are still homophobes in the world so ‘outing’ people is really a mean, smiteful thing to do.”

“I’m sorry you’re blinded by the guy,” said Chris, ignoring the fact that he had tried to ‘out’ Reid.

“Chris, I care about you. You’re a great guy but you have a blind spot with Reid. You had no right to ‘out’ him or to try to embarrass him in front of me about the malpractice suit,” lectured Katie.

“He stole that fellowship during medical school, you know,” hissed Chris.

“That doesn’t seem very likely. If it was such a big, prestigious thing, they would have been careful about giving it to someone who really earned it. They would have double-checked everything. And if there were rumors afterwards, they would have checked again. Even if he was a different person back then to who he is now, it’s still impossible for him to have stolen the fellowship. And if you continue telling people that he did, he could sue you for slander.”

“Katie, Reid is a dishonest jerk who only cares about himself. But I really care about you so if it bothers you, I’ll try to stop insulting Reid to you so much, okay?”

“Thank you. I appreciate that Chris.”

Katie and Chris left the examination room together in order to help put the party together for Kim and Bob’s Big Anniversary. But Katie was left with lingering thoughts about Chris and Reid. She hadn’t known Reid for very longer but she did know that he cared about his patients, about the neurowing providing medical care to the uninsured, about Jacob. There were things about Reid that she didn’t know, of course. But she was sure that he was a good man. She didn’t understand how Chris couldn’t see that. It’s not like Chris had always been a pure, shining beacon of morality. Heck, she hadn’t either. But she truly believed that Chris was a good man, regardless of all of the [many] mistakes he had made. She was sure that once Chris came to know Reid, he would see what a good person Reid was.
