The TARDIS hummed to a stop. "Barcelona!" the Doctor announced, though this was the fourth time he'd announced it, and the first three times he'd been wrong. An adventure was an adventure, though. Amy threw the door open, only half-expecting sunny beaches.
It was a beach. It wasn't sunny. Mists shrouded the sea. While the air was warm enough, this wasn't the balmy holiday planet she'd been waiting to see. "You missed again."
"Ah. Well. We're close to Barcelona. Definitely close … " His voice drifted off as he read something on a screen. "Actually, no. We're in fact very far away from Barcelona, and we need to leave right now."
Amy glanced outside again. It was still a beach. "Are there sharks?"
"No."
"Tigers?"
"Also no."
"Giant crabs?"
He paused. "No … " But he didn't sound as certain.
"Then let's have a look-around. We'll nip out, take a look at the very dangerous beach, and go." She twitched her eyebrows at him.
Then she stepped outside. The sea breeze was cooler here. The wet sand looked uninviting but not especially giant crab worthy. Amy wrapped her arms around herself and shivered a little; the mists made everything seem surreal and chilly.
"Who are you?"
Amy spun and stared. There was a six-foot-tall purple winged monster watching her warily. Vicious claws tipped long fingers, and a powerful-looking tail lashed out behind it, no, her. Definitely a her.
"Um. Hi," said Amy, thinking a good introduction might save her from being eaten and realising quickly this wasn't one. "My friend and I got a bit lost, but we'll just be going now." She backed away carefully.
The monster stared. "Where is your boat? The Guardian comes to and fro in a skiff, but you don't have anything." She watched Amy with curiosity that Amy rather hoped was not bundled with hunger.
"Hello, there!" said the Doctor, coming out behind her. "As she said, we'll just be going. Didn't mean to disturb you."
"Are you a wizard?" asked the monster.
"Probably yes, if that's the word you use."
"He's not a wizard," said Amy. "He's the Doctor."
"A doctor? We need a doctor," said the monster. "Princess Katharine has been ill." She turned to the Doctor. "Would you help her?"
The Doctor looked at Amy, who looked right back. Wizards, princesses, fairy tales. It sounded right up their alley.
Amy stepped forward and gently took the monster's hand. "I'm Amy. We'd love to help you." She cast a glance at the Doctor, who was miming 'let's get back into the TARDIS' fairly ineffectively.
"Angela," said the monster, and Amy realised it was her name. She supposed if one were to see angels as giant purple women with wings, the name fit. And Angela didn't seem like she wanted to eat anyone.
"Nice to meet you," Amy said with a smile. "Let's go save that princess of yours."
