Summary: Sophie liked to believe herself to be the greatest actress the world had ever known. She was right.
AN: Written for halfamoon. This is the beginning of the story of my heart, which I may never finish but wanted to share a taste of.

Sophie rather thought the play had gone better than expected. The audience seemed a bit less enthused than she'd hoped, and all right, the curtain call had been less of a call and more of a yawn. But frankly, she believed her turn as Roxie had been quite good, and if the patrons couldn't see that, it was their own loss.

There'd been one woman in a front row seat who'd clapped delightedly. She'd been more enthusiastic than anyone else, though her boisterousness had just emphasised the lack of everyone else's interest. Still, it was nice to have a fan.

The woman was waiting outside the door when Sophie made her way out.

"Oh," Sophie said, flustered. "So sorry. I don't give autographs."

"I know. Wouldn't want your handwriting to be too widespread." The woman smiled, some hidden joke behind her eyes.

Sophie glanced around them. There were people on the street. She could see at least five avenues of escape, if she didn't count the ones that would get her injured in the process. She gave the woman a bright, fake smile. "Must go. So glad you liked the show."

"I'd prefer a private performance, if one is available."

Sophie gave her another glance, more critical this time: curly blondish hair, eyes older than her face, clothes subtly off for someone out at the theatre, too busty for Sophie's normal type. For a pass, it wasn't bad, but Sophie wasn't interested.

As she went to turn the woman down, the other leaned in. "Your reputation precedes you regarding your acting abilities in your … other roles. I'm looking for the very best for a particular job." Her expression hadn't changed, and it layered her words. She did indeed want an actress, and oh, Sophie liked to believe herself to be the greatest the world had ever known.

None of her castmates were nearby, nobody on the street paid them any mind. Sophie allowed a smile of her own to cross her face. "I'd love to hear more of this proposition, though I think we should retire to somewhere more private."

The woman's face lit up. "I agree." She took Sophie's arm in a rather intimate gesture, and then exposed her own arm, where she wore a most unusual leather wristwatch. Sophie had time to wonder what on Earth she was doing, and then the phrase "on Earth" no longer applied.
