The slightly longer backstory is that Jack has been pondering telling him (and Gwen) about what's coming to get their help, but timelines might be screwed up so he chose not to. And now, it's too late. Jack is positive that come morning, Ianto will be dead or undead, so it's sort of a gift, here's a piece of the future, and it's sort of an apology, sorry I couldn't save you.
