When does being organised cross into being anal?

I'm driving the crack_van van for NCIS again in April. As such I spent Saturday afternoon and this afternoon finding story links, putting together the posts in Semagic and also setting up my computer reminder with a postal schedule ( Read more... )

I've never recced on crack_van, but I'd have it organised just like you. Including backups.

You know it makes sense!

Yay!

I am not alone - that is good to hear.

And of course it does. To me it's logical but . . . *g*

Go you :)
I'd try to be organised like that, because whenever I get asked for recs my mind goes blank. So it works better for me to just put them intgo memories when it occures to me and then pull it all together as required.

That's me being noble of course. Failing that I might have a vauge plan from memory; but then throwing it all together on the last day in a panic wouldn't be totally ooc (because uh yeah I'm so not doing that with challenge #39).

I love your posts on crack van, so looking forward to getting some ideas.

Thank you.

That makes sense - I tend to save all stories I like and all G/D stories to my HD, but that can sometimes lead to a little chasing down if it's not someone I know, to go back to the original site. So I have some saved in my memories as well.

*Smiles* Of course you're not. Whatever works for you, works for you.

Thank you.

You're welcome :)

Ah right, that makes good sense. I have a few saved on my PC too; good for trips or when the internet access dies.

lol well thing is it's really not that effective at all, hence me trying to break the habit.

:-)

Exactly. I have to say I never really have understood people who never save any stories, but rely on the site always being there. I've seen so many posts, here and on lists, of people bemoaning the fact that their favourite author's site/fannish site has vanished/

*Smiles* You'll get there.

I've never done it, but I'd like to think I'd have found all the stories I was going to rec in advance. I'd be impressed with myself for having done that.

I wouldn't have a schedule, or have written the posts yet though... *is slightly scared*

I would like to think most folk would have some idea of what they are going to rec, even if it's only a handful of stories.

*Smiles* Be afraid . . . Be very afraid . . .

I've only just rec'd the one time (this month) and for "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." but here's what I did in preparation.

I went through the entire Crack Van archive and made of list of every story rec'd so far, because there wasn't one. I actually did that in December 2008 when I decided I wanted to have a go at driving the Van and couldn't find a list of what had already been done. Is that anal or just common sense? Probably a bit of both.

Then I kept updating the list as other folks drove and will continue to do that throughout the year. I posted them on muncle so that's my backup. I also have it on my backup hard drive. Just in case ( ... )

I'm glad someone else puts in preparation too and has anal tendencies :-) Or organised, is how I like to think of them.

I try to avoid posting at a weekend as I know far fewer people are around then and with Easter being in April I wanted to avoid that as well.

Interesting you mention ratings. To me ratings are pointless and superfluous as they are far too subjective. One person's idea of a 'G' rated story is another person's idea of a PG-13 or PG and NC-17. Hence I don't even look at ratings for anything other than the fact I have to put them. But every round I've done I've found myself with at least one story that I think is over or under rated and not just by one 'point' so to speak. So that's never of any importance to me as a reader.

I like to have things done in advance - prepared in case something goes wrong and I simply don't have the time to write a 'why this should be recc'd'.

Thank you for sharing how you did it.

Do you have all of your posts done before the beginning of the month?

No.

Do you have one or two done before the beginning of the month?

Yes.

Do you have them all done within a few days of the start of the month?

I tried and then it sort of didn't happen.

Do you have none done before the beginning of the month but know exactly what stories you are going to rec?

I have a rough idea and ideally have the entire list done before the beginning of the month.

Do you write the post on the day you are going to post it?

I try to have it done the day before at the very least.

Do you have a posting schedule in mind?

Yes, generally. About 3 a week.

Although I have only done the crack_van thing once. ;-)

I bet what I do didn't surprise you, did it?

Knowing what stories you are going to rec, or at least some of them, is very important I feel.

I try to avoid weekends and also as Easter is in April that too - that takes out quite a lot of days.

It's quite tiring driving the van and time consuming, hence why I like to be ready in advance.

I would have to say...no. ;-)

Yes I think you have to have some sort of idea.

Oh yes you want maximum exposure so to speak.

Yes indeed. That's why I haven't volunteered again at the moment I have no time to devote to it.

*Giggles* I thought as much.

Indeed.

Well quite - that's my aim.

Ahhh. That makes a lot of sense. And you do, yes.
