Oh, you're killing me with this. You started off with a nice humorous scene, and then pow.

The interaction between Robert and Hugh is brilliantly observed - that level of awkwardness between two people who know each other so well. It's painful to read.

Glad that interaction works for you. It was something that I really wanted to capture--how Hugh is stuck in this tug-of-war with himself, wanting to be close with Robert but needing to back away to protect them both. It's not an easy thing for the character. I am very pleased that you're enjoying though!

When Robert coldly asked Hugh how he wanted to kill off the relationship, I thought I was going to cry. That was an absolutely spell-binding scene.

Two people sharing a smoke like that can be so strangely intimate -- it reminds me of old black and white movies, where the male heroes used to bond like that. I love the image of Hugh disappearing into the night via taxi, like the cigarette ash dissolving. Great stuff (but you're making me cry!)

Thanks. There will be brighter spots on the way--it seems everyone's sniffling and offering chocolate for a break from the angst. Both HL and RSL are very close to a breakthrough. It's just a gradual process, as I'm sure anyone who has ended a relationship can attest to.

I was so moved last night that I forgot to mention how much I liked the twist that Robert was confiding in Stephen. To me that is a great way of indirectly showing how much Robert cares for Hugh -- that he would have the irrepressible need to reach out to someone who would understand how much he loved Hugh. Gah! That's exquisite.

I also find it interesting how Robert has tried to let Hugh guide the relationship; he puts the important choices in front of Hugh, but goes along with what Hugh wants and lets him control the flow. There is a touching self-sacrifice there that grabs at my heart too.

I am so glad you mentioned those two things. RSL calling Stephen just kind of "happened." I was typing away and RSL just started talking, so I let him go with it. He and SF got along pretty well in the previous fics when SF came to visit; and as you've said, who else would understand that connection he felt with HL better than SF?

As for guiding the relationship... While RSL has encouraged HL to commit more, you're right, he has let HL decide what he wants from it. RSL is very aware that HL is making the bigger sacrifice and risk being together. He knows HL cares for him, but that he's coming second when HL's family is concerned.
