I like Trillian, so that doesn't help.

But how come people say "Woe is me!" and not "I am woe!"?

I use AIM and that works just fine. But you're afraid of AIM. Dori recommends Adium (which is for Mac).

Yeah, I recommended Adium (to myself), but unfortunately, I'm too poor to buy a Mac.

Is AIM not packaged with adware and viri and bugs and TELL THIS GIRL IF SHE'S HOT and DOWNLOAD THIS PROGRAM THAT WILL TELL YOU THE WEATHER and stuff?

Um, nope, there are ads, but you can disable those if you download a free plug-in like palfun or the like. Make sure that you don't install wildtangent if it asks you to, and install an ad blocker to get rid of the ad at the top of your buddylist and AIM's quite bearable indeed. People exaggerate how bad it is quite a bit.

I don't know what's wrong with gaim. Last night it started going wonky and it logged me out of one of my screennames and wouldn't log me back in, despite my efforts. Then it just started freezingcrashingdying and then I gave up.
