I'm reductio-ing to the level of the mentality involved. Seriously, spending two days on the Blizzard official forums has sharply reduced my verbal acuity.
As a complete outsider to WoW (what's a Horde? :-P) I think the whole incident is deplorable, and their response so far is inadequate.
However, in fairness I must note that their (unhappily brief) apology does actually include the words "We are sorry that we offended anyone". Which at least is more of an acknowledgement of responsibility than "it's too bad that some people chose to be offended".
World of Warcraft is split into two opposing factions: the Alliance and the Horde. General smack-talk is fairly common between both factions (as well as within both factions), with a fairly significant amount of that smack-talk taking the form of juvenile queer-baiting. Juvenile queer-baiting on the Official Forums and in the game itself can and will get you ToSed if it's reported, or if you engage on it in server open communication chats. It is, nonetheless, fairly endemic and getting verbally abused in this fashion in random dungeon groups is one of the things you can count on as a dead certainty unless you're with a group of friends/guildies. That's why, among other things, having the the actual President of Blizzard and one of the founders of the company implicitly endorsing it in any way has enraged a lot of people. The WoW community is full of dickheads and giving them aid and comfort is an URGE TO KILL...RISING issue.
I'd take that line more seriously if they actually displayed a trace of awareness of why people are actually

I have spent the past few days feeling miserable and sick over all of this. Just, empathy, learn some. For fuck's sake.
