The roof, Saturday morning

Sep 30, 2006 13:14

Nadia wandered restlessly up to the roof (where it was oh so cold and wet and dreary and wasn't that just perfect?) and went to go sit with her guitar and practice for tonight's performance.

She wondered if Zero would notice if she played everything in a minor key?

cut for lyricy dooooooom )

Walter, looking disheveled, came from his room to the roof, looking for a place to have his whiskey and his cigarettes without being bothered about either.

Seeing Nadia and hearing her song choice, he seriously considered sneaking right back out of there. He didn't know if he had the energy to deal with her emo on top of his own.

Nadia didn't notice Walter at first; her eyes were closed as she switched from the Smiths to the Shins.

I think i'll go home and mull this over
Before i cram it down my throat
At long last it's crashed, it's colossal mass
Has broken up into bits in my moat--

Then she noticed. "Oh. Hi."

Well, so much for the strategic withdrawal option. Walter went to lean against the plant bed and spun the top off the whiskey. "Hi yourself."

Nadia continued to strum minor chords on the guitar, though she was wishing she had gloves or something. She turned her gaze up to the gray sky.

"Fall has fallen too fast."

"Uh huh." Whiskey. That was a good breakfast. "It sucks."

As an afterthought, he held the bottle out to Nadia while he pulled out his cigarettes.

Nadia accepted the bottle, gave it a brief sniff, then took a long pull, her eyes tearing inexplicably. "It sucks a lot."

"Yeah." Walter sighed heavily and lit his cigarette. "I have to work this afternoon, too. I don't want to go."

"S'not worth it. Working, concerts, none of it." Nadia took another long pull and handed the bottle back.

Walter blew a cloud of smoke into the air and took the bottle back for a long pull of his own.

"School. Sucks. Do you ever wonder why we bother with any of this? Someone's just going to come and drop a bomb on it when you're not expecting it."

"Flying pink ponies. Next invasion. Worse than bombs."

"Or fish monsters or raging robots or a vampire sneaking in during the night and turning the whole town to ghouls. It's a damned losing battle. It just never ends."

That called for more whiskey.

"Would being a ghoul be less effort? That might be nice."

"No free will, no soul. That takes the really complicated parts out. Free will's pretty much where all the trouble comes from."

Unless the future really was predestined. And then what was the point of bothering to be alive?

Nadia leaned back and stared up at the sky, sighing. "Is this all there is? Just . . . waiting for the next awful thing to happen?"

"It feels that way. There's just always more. More Nazis, more vampires, more demons, more shit." He sighed again and held up the bottle.

"But not more whiskey after we finish this unless I go get more." And then he'd just sober up again. Why bother?

"The roof has a still on it. But it would probably kill us to drink it." Nadia strummed on her guitar.
