It was cold, and it was raining...
Just a usual night in Cardiff some would say, except there was something about it, something that made people like Ianto Jones want to stay out in it longer than they really should...just that instant longer that made something happen...
Something that made them all disappear...
It was those people who were outcasts as children, the ones who enjoyed sitting in the playground alone when a storm came to pass, as it meant they were left alone while the bullies and the ignorant fucks cowered inside, afraid of the cooling comfort held within those droplets of liquid.
Ianto Jones was one of those children...
Those ones who had grown up to enjoy long walks in the rain, never rushing into the nearest shelter, as the refuge was pointless, it felt better to him to be at one with nature, to feel alive by hearing the roaring of the thunder and feel the splashing of the rain down his face.
And even though Jack had Retconned him and left him alone, crying in the rain, it hadn't stopped Ianto enjoying night's like this, when the air was crisp and the rain was suitably comforting. As it was the rain that had helped calm him down that night...
*******
From inside the Hub, very little was being done...
John had fallen asleep on his desk due to lack of caffeine stimulus in his malnourished system, Sabine was trawling uselessly through medical records of every single person reported missing since the night of Ianto's disappearance, and Jack and Gwen were searching the Hub, much to no avail...
"Jack?" Came Sabine's soft Welsh voice over the comms. "Sir?"
"Yes, what is it Sabine?" He asked, exasperated at the lack of progress they were making. Gwen was always one for the measured approach, and although it usually came out with the desired result, it was the waiting that drove Jack mad...the waiting, and the searching...He instantly regretted snapping at the new girl though.
"Remember the alien we caught the other night? The one you said Ianto put in the freezer? I think you should check it actually is down there, I have a theory, but I need you to double check that for me, before I can test it..."
"I'm on it." He grabbed Gwen's wrist and pulled her off in the direction of the freezers, ignoring her yelp of shock and the complaints that they'd already searched that area. Sabine had obviously figured out how to get the frequency for Jack's comm unit, and tuned into it so only Jack had heard about her little theory. Boy, the girl was better than she let on...
*********
He found a young girl weeping on a set of wooden steps. She must have been about five years old. Strange, he thought, aren't her parents looking for her?
"Hello?"
The girl turned her head and looked at him, the first person to do so since he'd mysteriously become invisible. He stepped closer, but only into a distance at which he didn't seem threatening.
"My Mummy said not to talk to strangers"
"Does your Mummy know you're here?"
"No...she thinks I disappeared, but I tried telling her I was right there...and then she called school, to ask if the bullies had done something, but I was still standing beside her...and-and-and Mister?" She seemed more at ease in his company now, so he edged a bit closer, kneeling slightly so he was at eye level with her.
"Yes love?"
"What's going on?"
"You're very smart, you know that? Do you mind if I sit down?"
"No Mister"
"Call me Ianto, and what's your name?"
"Aoife. Aoife Owens. You spell it A-O-I-F-E. Mummy says it's an Irish name," she smiled at him, proud of her knowledge. "I have a friend called Ianto. He's the only nice one at school. The others tease me ‘cos they think I'm weird. Only ‘cos I know stuff. See mum taught me to read and write before I started school. I read the whole of the Miffy Adventures before I started Primary One in September!"
Ianto sighed and raised his eyebrows. "You really are intelligent."
"Mister? How come you're the only person who can see me?"
"That's what I'm trying to figure out. You see, no one can see me either...if that makes sense. So tell me Aoife, why are you out in the rain?"
"I like it, it's nice..."
"Do you wanna go for a walk? Can't imagine your Mum would be pleased if you caught a cold, eh?" And at that he straightened up, knowing that under normal circumstances some would mistaken him for a predator, but under these unique ones, he was simply offering the comfort of companionship to a confused and utterly lost child...
**********
"John. John. John. John. John. John...Joooohhhhhnnnn....JOHN," she sighed and turned around, pacing slowly away until she reached the door to Jack's office. Plenty of distance to run up behind him and scare the shit out of him.
And so she began, one hand extended to push his chair forward slightly and the other curled into a fist to slam down on the file he was currently drooling over in his comatose state, hoping that the resulting noise and jolt would wake him...
Hoping, but then again, she remembered Ianto's tales of Jack's snoring. It must take a lot to wake any of Jack's partners...
As she shoved the chair, John's head shot up, a strangled yelp escaping his lips as he promptly fell onto the floor, his jumper getting caught on the arms of the seat, causing him to look like a puppet on strings.
He sighed and looked at Gwen with tired eyes. "Yes?"
"Well, I was wondering if you got anything on the CCTV"
"Nothing yet. I'll call you if anything shows up"
"John, you've been asleep for 4 hours from what Sabine told me. I think you need to go back to your apartment and get some proper sleep. Seriously, you've been surviving off Ianto's coffee, and now he's not here, you need to actually sleep. Okay?"
"Okay, I'll close up and leave when you're going. No earlier though"
"Deal," she sighed, turning back to her own computer and searching through the police logs again...
**********
"Sabine?"
"Could you tell me your theory now? I just got rid of Gwen."
"Well, I was just thinking, what if alien nasty wasn't in the freezers. What if it disappeared, like Ianto-"
"Then there's some kind of link between the two? That, and all the other missing people in Cardiff, yes?"
"Yes, and once we've clarified that..."
Jack stepped into the morgue, striding towards the cupboard allocated for the alien they'd captured that night, and opened it. Nothing, not a sign of it, and no clipboard with Ianto's swirly signature on it to prove that it had been left down. What now?
"Sabine, it's not here, but it's getting late, we've made a lot of progress today, how about we call it a night?"
"Okay, see you tomorrow sir"
He made his way back up to the main area of the Hub, knowing Sabine would be gone when he got there, and set off in the direction of his office.
"Jack," Gwen looked at him, raising an eyebrow questioningly.
"What? Is there something on my face?" He asked, wondering why she was looking at him in that way.
"No...nothing, right, I've sent you through the files on the missing people," she said, standing up, "I'll see you tomorrow Jack"
Sighing, she leant in and hugged him, and expression of concern etched across her features. It was one Jack knew well, and he knew better than to ask why. He just hugged her back and smiled. "See you in the morning Gwen"
Once the cog door alarms silenced, Jack returned to his office and made himself comfortable on his seat. Oh what he wouldn't do for a coffee. He hadn't realised how tired he was until that moment. Right then all the worry of the last three days caught up with him, all the pain of that night he'd thought he could go through with getting rid of Ianto...
He closed his eyes and put his head in his hands, hoping that by some slim chance, it had all been a dream, and he would wake up to find himself looking into the young Welshman's eyes, his young Welshman...His Ianto Jo-
"Jack."
And once more he was jolted into a reality he no longer wanted to be a part of.
