Dedicated, as ever to just_being_me08  cos she beta'd this for me, and is just brilliant! And melthorne  who is my beta, and is oh-so supportive!

Ianto Jones was not in his apartment.

Ianto Jones was not in fact, anywhere in Cardiff from what Jack's searches revealed.

All in all, it seemed as if Ianto had dropped off the face of the Earth...

*2 days later*

"JACK! I THINK I'VE FOUND IT!"

"Hmm?"

"Jack get down here"

"Okay okay, what's all this about?" He made his way down to the autopsy bay, following the sound of excited chatter, and the smell of John's hormones. Jack could always smell them when John was embarassed or aroused. And for some reason Jack doubted he was aroused...but then again, like Jack, most things excited John...

When he peered over the barrier he found John's familiar, but at the same time entirely different form, bent over the gurney in a state of undress, with Gwen's hand on the back of his neck, restraining him.

"Er...why-"

"Sabine thought we all needed medical check ups. You know..." Gwen motioned to a rather upset looking John. "And, well he was being awkward about the termometer, so..."

"So, they shoved it up my arse! This is harrassment!"

Jack laughed. "Not in Torchwood it's not. Now suck it up"

"I'll do more than that..." He grumbled, shifting slightly.

"What was that? You never complained-" Jack mocked.

"Yeah but it wasn't a freezing thermometor shoved up my-"

Gwen giggled. "John. I think we've got the picture thanks. Now, on a more serious note, Jack, can I go home early?"

Jack sighed and turned round to leave. "Unless the world decides to end you can do what you want. Just see me in my office in five minutes..."

******

Gwen sauntered into Jack's office, not noticing Ianto following close behind...

Ianto Jones, who apparently didn't exist anymore...

"Gwen...I need to talk to you...please, close the door, I don't want Sabine and John to hear this..."

Gwen looked worried, but did as she was instructed, finally pulling a seat in front of Jack's desk and sitting down. "What's this about Jack?"

Jack tried to avoid her steely glare, and then began. "It's Ianto...he...God Gwen this is so hard...I retconned him-"

"YOU DID WHAT?!"

"Look listen to me. I couldn't stand seeing him go through pointless pain for me-"

"So is that what you do to us when your sick of seeing us Jack?"

"Gwen I wanted him to have a normal life, a wife, or husband or whatever, and not have to face death without a real person to go home to at night. You have that. He didn't, and he deserved better, and now I realise it was a big mistake..."

She shuffled in her seat, never once taking her eyes of Jack's. "And how are you going to resolve it?"

"I don't know Gwen. I honestly don't know. Ianto Jones has completely disappeared and there's nothing I can do about it"

Gwen suddenly threw her seat over and stood up, shouting, "There has to be something Jack, an anitdote, anything! We need Ianto, Jack. And you of all people know that. You're the one who needs him most! Don't think I haven't noticed how withdrawn you've been while he's been 'sick'. Now can we please find him and jog his memory. Or something. Please Jack. You can't just do that, not after Tosh and Owen"

And there was the fatal blow...

Jack let a tear fall from his eye as he tried to answer. "Gwen. Listen to me. He has literally disappeared. He's not in his flat, he's not in Cardiff. He hasn't left the UK, and yet he's not here. I've searched everywhere for him, and there's not a trace of him anywhere. It's maddening, and I can't even think straight. I need him back, I admit it..."

"What? One, you're admitting you need someone? And two, you're saying Ianto's dead?"

"No, no...not dead. At least I hope not..." He sighed. "Look, don't tell Sabine or John. I'll tell them tomorrow...just...go home and enjoy Rhys and forget about it until you get in in the morning. Can you do that?"

"I'll try...good night Jack. Just promise me you won't do anything stupid..."

And at that she turned to leave, not knowing that was the one thing Jack couldn't promise, and Ianto who was standing beside him couldn't either....
