This is why I hate technology. And fire can go fuck itself, too.

I don't have the best camera in the world. It's a Canon Powershot A1000, it's not for professional photographers or anything, it's a point-and-shoot, I get that ( Read more... )

I'm not sure exactly what type of photography you're needing the shutter release for, but I get good results with a tripod + the camera's timer. Waiting ten seconds would be tedious, but all the models I've had lately also have a two-second option. It's obviously not a great solution if the instant of taking the photo is vital, though.

I have long wanted a camera with 'bulb' mode. But the ones that have it are completely out of my price range.

I agree with platypus, if I need shake free pictures, I also use the camera's timer and it works great. I have a Canon Ixus camera and the timer can be set between 1 and 30 seconds, so waiting is not a problem. My brother also has a point and shoot Canon camera, and can set the timer freely. So perhaps this is an option for your camera too?

I third this. Back when I used a film camera (Canon AE-1) and I didn't have the scrilla for a mechanical cable release, I used the timer. It took time, but let me do the occasional self-portrait or otherwise dead-still camera shot.

I don't trust or understand software/firmware hacks, which might damage the camera I can't, you know, fucking afford to replace, and I don't understand electronics, which is really cool but unfortunately falls into a mental grey area of stuff that is really fucking hard for me to understand even the basics of. It's not zany DIY, hack-your-way-to-greatness fun, it's fucking torture, like math class. Like, wiring a single LED is too much for me. PATHETIC I KNOW.

Not pathetic, not at all. The job that laid me off at the end of September? Full of guys who thought that hacks like that were fun! and enjoyable! ways to spend time. Because I didn't think this I was labeled a luddite and/or technologically incapable. Funny, I just think that things should work out of the box and not need to be fucked with in order to have basic functions. You're not alone in this.

I find it tragic that anything should divert you from your art. Sadly, there's not a magic widget off-the-shelf for this camera.

One of your most comforting mediums that I've seen is bone.

From that? I had a daydream flash on you making a button pusher rig out of some bony digit articulated to take the shot when a string pulled etc or however else you see fit to make bones do your bidding..

In all fairness, there isn't a whole heck of a lot of space available in a small electronic housing for a mechanical trigger that few people actually use. I know I don't, preferring a timer for self portraiture as, that way, there's no remote shutter release cable and bulb showing up in my photo.

Edited for grammar

True, but. If a firmware update -- albeit a hacked one -- and a cobbled-together trigger that plugs into the USB port can be made to work, they don't need to build anything into the structure of the camera. They just need to alter the firmware to support it.

There's not much difference between a USB trigger and the shutter delay feature, though, granted.

Okay, fair enough, but most companies are not going to invest a lot of effort into programming such support unless there's enough demand for ti.

Meanwhile, what's with the pirate user head? WANT!

Jettcat bought it for me! LJ recently released a custom userheads feature that is just awesome. You can buy them in the store.
