Humans Bleed.

I saw a link today to this website, where artist Vanessa Tiegs has made these incredible paintings with her blood - yes, menstrual blood - and was amazed by just how beautiful they are. I think the idea of painting with blood of any kind is fascinating, but most paintings of this type don't interest me, largely because they play into the problems ( Read more... )

Amen. I got heartily sick of the pagan tendency to deify and expect exaltation of a painful, messy biological process that I resented having to deal with in the first place.

I ♥ my hysterectomy. That is sacred, to me. The ability of medical science to remove an organ that causes pain without serious side effects - priceless!

I have never been able to grasp the concept of *celebrating* your period. (Unless you've had a pregnancy scare, but I digress.) Certainly people are free to celebrate it - but don't ask me to understand! But hey, my period once caused me to collapse at work and end up in hospital, so I think I'm on the 'this sucks' end of things. :P

Also, I am a mother who knows a fair few other mothers, and am always a bit baffled by women who were 'empowered' by giving birth. I was just happy when it was done!

I guess for me, bodily processes are just that - processes. I'm neither enlightened nor empowered by them - they're just part of me. Being female can suck as much as it can be great.

My period sends me a very different message, of the "You have had another month of conception-free sex, congratulations!" I think I would go mad on that Seasonique stuff, and would eventually stock up on "I'm not pregnant, right?" tests.

However, I'm one of the lucky ones who has mostly well behaved menses... unlike our unfortunate patient who operated at roughly HALF her normal hemoglobin secondary to horrifically severe periods.

Yeah, I'm always grateful for my period for its "Oh, hey, you haven't conceived, yay!" powers. I have no desire to call it "sacred" or anything like that. Bodily function, thank you.

I'm on a very high dose of birth control pill (because I am also on an enzyme-inducing epilepsy drug), and my periods have been reduced to maybe one day of bleeding and three days of mild spotting. I almost want more of a period at this point, even though I know the contraceptives are obviously working.

Flew, you always have the best stuff. I think I'm going to have to post that to childfree.
