Dilemmas, Dilemmas.

My dad is a font of fatherly wisdom.

When I was a teenager, we were at a rock and mineral show, and someone there had a genuine Smilodon skull. For reasons that currently escape me, they were asking some ridiculously low sum of money for it. An arm, as opposed to an arm and a leg ( Read more... )

And hell, if you really find yourself unable to get by without that money, you could always resell the skull.

. . . probably to my dad.

That is a very good skull.

I'd go for it. I would, even though it's probably not the most useful use of money: it's the most satisfying.

That's actually not the very one; that was just the best picture of the general species I could find on short notice. The one I'm favoring is this one. I finally got a picture! Though pictures of other possibilities are forthcoming.

That particular one has all its teeth, it's from a very large individual, and it has only one area of minor damage that is impossible to see unless you turn it over.

The other two I'm waiting on sound beautiful, but not quite that nice.

Excellent!

That particular album and its sequels are probably the best metal albums I own. And that is really saying something. I get chills every time I listen to them. Especially Black Halo. Amazing.

For me, when faced with these kind of decisions, I ask myself: "What will I regret more?".

So for you, what will you regret more "I just spend a huge amount on money on a bone!" or "I let that perfect completion of my collection get away...".

I think you should go for it.

The thing that is bothering me most is that I almost without a doubt will have another shot at this, even if it takes me another five years of looking.

And for the price of this skull, I could get . . . oh, jeez . . . I could buy a wolverine AND another wolf, or a Great Dane, or a replica dire wolf, or. . . .

Those will always be there, though. Hard to find, yes, and not consistently in stock, but possible to obtain with minimal fuss and bother.

Ah, that is a slightly different angle. I've chanced situations like this before, and lost, because I knew the item wasn't going to come again at a time I could avail of it.

I think I know what I'd choose, but I'm not the one with the choice at the moment. Good luck with your decision.

You've put your finger on another truth: I DO have the money NOW. I may get another shot, but that may not coincide with money.

You really want it, you have the money and it won't put you into financial problems? You have wanted this for a long time, and it will always be something you want?

Go for it. Stop with what sounds like worrying about what it is, and just enjoy the fact that you want it and can buy it. Who the hell cares what other people think of how you spend your money, hmmm?
