you should try low-dose aspirin...like the buffered, 81mg sort that they have for heart patients... aspirin works better for dogs than it does for humans... i had my old dog on it, and she went back to running around like a puppy.. the glucosamine supplements they have for dogs is entirely to expensive, so if you do want to add a supplement, try giving the dog dry Knox or other gelatin mixed in with the food..
If you pay attention to dosage you can just give em human glucosamine.
My grossly overweight sausage like Black Lab mutt childhood companion went from "can't get on the couch" at twelve back to "bounding up on the bed" at thirteen. She was still better, pretty much up to the last month, then she had been before we started her on the glucosamine. I do believe we were giving her asprin as well, but I'd have to check with my Mom.
Occasionally I think that perhaps it may be time for me to start taking that stuff before my various joint maladies catch up with me.
yea, but that can also be a bit pricey depending on brand and whatnot... i've found that Knox or jello works just as well, is a bit cheaper, and easier to give to a dog than trying to shove pills down them
I'm sorry about the pooch. :( That's good you can try something though before having to come to the putting down alternative. . . I know when my mom had to put my dog down (she didn't have any other choice unless she wanted the pooch to suffer), she said when they put the meds on the table, my mom almost told them to not do it. It was difficult. On one hand, I wish my mom had had enough notice to call me so I could drive down there (my parents live 3 1/2-4 hours away from me), but, on the other hand, maybe it was best I wasn't there. I've never once dealt with death in the true sense, and if I had been there, I wouldn't have stopped trying to find an alternative to keep her alive. Which is actually one of the reasons my mom didn't call me until after it was done.
BTW, sorry I haven't been posting comments lately. I've got to actually move back in with my parents, and my apartment complex gave me an alternative to an eviction I HAD to take. It was such short notice, so I've had to pack up my stuff and everything. But here I am. :)

Which, of course, is silly. But, hey, I have me a silly streak. At least I wasn't imagining swap-out genitalia or some such...
