The All-American Post: Apple Pie and Pussy.

Nov 22, 2005 01:39

Since you are all far wiser in the ways of cookery than I, I appeal: does anyone know of a good dairy-free apple pie recipe? I want to make something dessert-like to show familial solidarity with the in-laws, but Sargon's dad, Dad the Terrible, can't have milk products. My cooking lore is at a loss, here. Any advice will be much appreciated ( Read more... )

Yes, Fish does indeed defend the white bits vigorously. *nod nod* And good lord but Matt looked like he was dug in for the long haul there! As if I could have got up and walked around without him falling off. LOL!!

Also, that's a veeeeeeery familiar looking bottle of lotion on Fish. ;) And I must say I am seriously amazed she let you do that! *goggles*

Yes! I used the heavy one -- I'm halfway through the peach stuff, already, and am working on the purple stuff. The stuff is great on my poor dry skin.

I can't believe she tolerates what we do to her, either. I mean, we don't ever hurt her, but she doesn't seem to care about her dignity. At all. She honestly just lay there for about two minutes while we piled stuff on her and rearranged it. We only stopped when we were laughing too hard to keep piling stuff on without knocking it over. She doesn't give a rat's ass.

I have the whole batch of those ready to send to you, by the way. I'm terribly sorry, again, about their bad manners using you for a couch. It's really rare that they take that much of a butt-waving interest in someone. *lol*

You can also vouch for The Fish's ability to play kitty soccer.

I swear, I never meant to have this many freakin' cats. *headdesk*

Have you made piecrust before? Did it work? If the answer to either of these is 'no', get a frozen pie crust (pre-rolled or not). Most of them aren't dairy; you'll likely have a choice between ones that have lard, and ones that have vegetable shortening. There are those who say this is cheating. I say it isn't. I have never been able to make piecrust work properly from scratch, even though it apparently isn't difficult ( ... )

Ooo! That's helpful, thanks!

I don't have a microwave, though. I still think I can fake it with a decent filling recipe.

Soften them on the stove in that case. They'll be fine as long as they don't end up as applesauce.

Hmm...I've never tried nuking the apples first. I don't think I ever used water either. My filling was just apples and sugar with a bit of cinnamon and a dusting of flour.

But agreed on the pie crust. I can and have made goot pie crust (legacy of watching my grandmother bake for years), but I prefer just grabbing one at the grocery store. It's a lot easier, and pretty much guaranteed butter-free.

Dreamwind to the rescue!

I have a lactose intolerance AND a wheat intolerance. I sympathise.

This recipe comes from The Blood Group Diet. I have been following this diet for 3 years now and it got the Crohn's Disease under control ( ... )

HAZELNUTS!

*drools!*

It has butter in it, though, and I have no idea what to substitute! Margarine tastes like . . . ugh. Bleah!

I reckon you could easily substitute margarine in a recipe though, especially since this one calls for unsalted butter in any case. I don't think you'll taste the difference in the end!

Cats = megacute. Thanks for spamming.

You could try butter-flavour Crisco. I like the way it makes most of my recipes turn out.

While adding milk to a pie crust can make it tender, it will be more flaky if the ingredients are just flour, shortening, and cold cold water. You can sprinkle sugar and cinnamon on top before baking, if you like.

And apple pie filling can have butter in it, but that's not necessary, either. There are a ton of apple pie filling recipes, so I will let you find one that you like instead of telling you what I like. Probably a Google search with "apple pie filling recipe" should do the trick, add "vegan" if too many come up that include butter.

I've also found two little excellent hints in, of all things, the Pillsbury cookbook, for making super-flaky crust: add a tbsp of vinegar to the water and a tbsp of sugar to the flour before using them in making the crust.

Wow that is so totally not traditional but I am saving the recipe. I barely ever bake but that sounds just absolutely delicious so I some day must try it.

Apricot jelly... Man that sounds like a good one! :-D (Will have to try it! :-)

Side note: I vote Cortland Apples for the all-time yummiest. :-) (Just my two cents). :-)
