EBay/PayPal/Postal Question

Question for you guys who do the eBay/PayPal thing:

I've never had this happen before, so I don't know what to do. An item I bought from eBay was damaged in transit. It was sent USPS, insured. I have the original PayPal reciept, a copy of the seller's shipping receipt, and the item and its packaging.

Now, I'm taking it all to the post office tomorrow to file an insurance claim, but I don't know how long it will take to get my money back from them, or if they will give me my money back; the item was not, in my opinion, adequately packaged. I imagine that means they may not reimburse me.

EBay has the most notoriously unfuckinghelpful "help" pages I have ever seen. I have no idea what to do if the postal folks are dicks about it.

Does PayPal cover this kind of damage? If so, do I need to file a claim even before I hear back from the post office, since it might take them a while to get back to me?

Anyone who has any experience with this sort of thing, please sing out. I'd be SO grateful. I'm at a loss, and just sick about both the beautiful totally broken thing that showed up on my doorstep, and about the money it cost me.

ETA: Forgot to mention, I did contact the seller, who was like "oh, Jeez, that's awful, let me know what the post office says." She's willing to deal, I think, but . . . damn.
