Venice, City of Cheap Tat

This shot summarizes my experience of Venice pretty well: acres of cheap tat being sold against an endless backdrop of gorgeous buildings.

I seem to not understand 'tat' - I thought that was either lace, or a tattoo. I don't see anything that fits either of those ideas.

For this one, we're going w/ a combo definition of #s 1 & 2:
tat 2 (tæt) - n
1. tatty articles or a tatty condition
2. tasteless articles
3. a tangled mass

Gorgeous building wuv gets you pretty far, though! I loved Venice, but it is also where I got closest to having my purse stolen right off my arm. By a guy on a moped, and I almost pulled him off. *shrug* But as a teen, for me that was 'local color' and it was ok.
