When Athena had finally found Artemis, it was such a relief. She hadn't been that far away, but apparently when she had gone around the corner, she had been taken to the same place she had started out. Going around in circles had driven her crazy. Then there had been that thing with no head. She had managed to have her gun on her, if only because she never went anywhere without it.

She also found a very big pair of rusted plant shears, and a really long chain. They were draped around her and in her hand as she finally made her way to the hospital. When she finally spotted her sister, she looked quite relieved but there was no time for that. They needed to find Hebe.

After divvying up the weapons, they both entered the hospital and started to look around. They just had to figure out where Hebe was.

Artemis wouldn’t say she was at ease. Not exactly. She could, however, consider herself prepared and under good company. To know Athena was nearby, was like having a fighting partner by her side, someone who she could trust implicitly to watch her back when needed. Apollo above all others but her siblings were not far behind. It explained the almost smile with which she greeted the other goddess, turned even more sincere when a weapon was stuck in her hands and the glass shard she had been using could be ditched for something sensible.

“She mentioned some sort of classroom but I was never here,” Artemis commented to her sister, mostly because the silence was annoying and they needed to have some plan to sweep a large area. “Floor by floor, text her when needed?”

She should have asked for more details. Hebe had been nervous though, as expected. It wasn’t likely that she would manage to exact floor, area and room. They would have to do it the hard way.”

No one could really be at ease, except for possibly the Horsemen. Athena had never really talked to any of them but the one named War, for obvious reasons. And as much as she didn't like to admit it, Athena was kind of enjoying herself. Like immensely. Not that she'd ever show it on her face. There were more pressing things on hand, like finding Hebe, and then figuring out a good spot to defend themselves. God knew what was inside this hospital. She could only imagine ( ... )

Time passed, but no Greek goddess showed up at the hardware store. Lancelot didn't know what had happened, but he wasn't about to sit around asking questions. The knight wasn't a man content to be idle. There was a possibility Athena was already at the hospital, and he wasn't about to miss out on the action. Lancelot found a utility belt, armed himself with two axes, and found a smaller chainsaw that wouldn't be a bitch to carry around. Properly equipped, the knight left the hardware store and began the frustrating journey to Staten Island University Hospital ( ... )

The goddess crouched beneath the gurney had absolutely no idea where she was in relation to the others, who she hadn't been alerted were inside the building. There was no way to know that this was an operating room-gone-classroom inside of the trauma center -- she could barely even place herself on the island. Hebe had never visited Staten Island before ( ... )

From Athena’s words to actions, there was no moment of hesitation. This was how hunts were made. You thought, you planned, you acted. You didn’t want around until the world resolved to mess up with you. Artemis flipped her cellphone open and texted quickly, just a simple message. ‘We’re here. Stay, be quiet. Floor?’ If Hebe had some sort of idea where she was, it would make this much much easier. The cellphone was closed again and placed aside, the gun settling comfortably in her uninjured hand.

“Done.” Artemis walked carefully, silently, eyes shifting from side to side while trying to keep her awareness for any unknown presence. Like the thing she had attacked earlier. If only they showed up, made themselves known. It was much easier to fight something when it wasn’t a ghostly shadow. “When I said to meet up, I didn’t mean it like this.” Really. It sounded the kind of party Hades would enjoy.

Then she stopped, just stopped in the middle of the hallway.

“Don’t you hear something?” Footsteps, maybe?

There was something in this hospital, Athena could almost sense it. The way people always could sense their opponent. Carefully she would go up to one of the doors that said classroom and prepared herself to open the door. Artemis would have her back and cover her. She gave her a wry kind of half-smile. "No, neither did I." She wished it wasn't like this, but well, they couldn't think like that.

Just as she was about to turn the knob and open the door, she heard the footsteps. There was something else too. She nodded and pointed to the direction that she thought it was coming from.

Now, did they wait for it to come to them? Or did they go and check it out. First though, she'd try this door and hope that nothing really creepy was inside.

Lancelot paused, back against the wall, to take in his immediate surroundings. The lobby looked gutted. Most of the fluorescent bulbs above were broken or flickering. Otherwise, it was clear. Fucking eerie, but clear. The knight pressed on down a hallway, shoes pattering softly against the floor.

A sixth sense told him he wasn't completely alone in this hospital. But he wasn't sure if he was in good company or bad company. He couldn't even be sure if Athena had already found and left with that woman. But at the very least, Lancelot knew he should stock up on anything he could find if the hospital wasn't already looted to the bones. Medical supplies. Drugs. Anything he could use or trade for goods.

When there was nothing creepy inside, and no sign of Hebe, Athena shut the door. There was still the sound of footsteps though, so that was where she was going to check next. Slowly but surely she made her way down the hallway until the footsteps got closer. Getting to the end of the hallway, she pressed herself up against the wall to peer around it, just in case there was something slithery down there.

However in fact, it was just a rather tall guy with blond hair and a weapon. "Lancelot, right?" she asked, hoping not to startle him enough to get shot or something like that. They definitely needed to loot the hospital, just as soon as they found Hebe. But at least now she knew where the knight was.

Still no sign of anything outside. Not even wind. Hebe, who'd moved on to quietly singing Downtown, was beginning to wonder if this was pointless and only going to attract things instead of her sisters. What if she brought back the dragging metal? Got herself killed just for wanting to be saved, for wanting to be wrapped in someone's arms and held there?

No, no thinking of that. They would find her. They would keep her safe. She had to be brave. For Ares, for her sisters. For Theseus, and for her.

The cellphone vibrated inside of her sweater pocket, and it was grabbed at, read and squinted at in the dark. Which floor? Hell if she knew. A quick message of "don't know, it's an operating room, double doors, window in them." Miraculously, she refrained from mentioning how scared she was, how she shook like a leaf against the wall.

But when something clanked in the vent, the goddess forgot about being brave. Clank. Clank. Scrape. Claws. Something with claws was inside of the vent. Hebe went as still as her shaking frame could allow her ( ... )

Artemis didn’t even blink when her cellphone blipped, announcing a new message. Operating rooms? She frowned, staring at the text like she wasn’t even seeing it. Operating rooms couldn’t be that common. Most of the hospitals were recovery, treatment, isolation. It narrowed it down. It narrowed it down a lot. A subtle sign to her sister and she broke away from their previous path, walking quickly back just enough to reach the floor plant. Operating rooms, first floor, section. The rest remained unread ( ... )

Flanking the two women, because who knew what might sneak up on them from behind, Lancelot flew into the room right on time to see the bullet hit its mark. It weren't no pretty sight, even for his strong stomach. The spray of discolored carnage and the twitching mess of who knew what else made the bile crawl up his throat. But he swallowed it down and barked a rough laugh.

"Nice shot," he said to the woman.

Under any other circumstance, Hebe might have attempted to at least look brave. But in between the door flying open and a gunshot ringing out, she'd ripped herself away from the creature and clumsily pressed her back into a counter, her heart beating at a hundred miles an hour. Breathe, breathe.

In the near-dark, there was no way to distinguish the color of her skin from the dirty black hand print around her midarm, but it was there. And she still felt those claws ghosting upon her flesh, even when it was gone. Gone with a bullet in it. Dead? She had no idea. She didn't care to know, just as long as it wasn't touching her.

Feeling like her heart was going to burst out of her chest, the goddess flung herself at Artemis' side like she was a lifesaver for a drowning person.
