Gawain almost sighed at that. He had been irrational, too harsh with the girl. Considering what he himself had done, could he not have given her a wider berth? Possibly. If he wasn’t sitting by Agravaine’s side, listening to that pathetic sound the machine did every time it pumped oxygen into his lungs. Later he would worry about cleaning up his mess. Not enough to bother him - half of the words in one ear, out the other - but the knight did nothing but acknowledge his own mistakes ( ... )

Mordred wasn't concerned about the possible irrationalities Gawain may be experiencing; he remembered clearly how he had behaved during the sickness but he also remembered being smart enough to stay far away from everyone else and keep communications to a minimum during that time. There was a measure of logic behind her words, not enough for him to feel chastened but enough for him to accept she probably had a point. Not that it changed anything ( ... )

“Old grudges carry far, brother.” Grudges and hatred. Gawain could see view the words Lancelot had thrown his side, like he knew more about Agravaine than himself, like he was some sort of fool who didn’t see what was in front of him until the last moment. But Gawain knew more than the other thought, he just kept it silent. Now, he even regretted having spared his uncle from knowing of the affair. It was clear the other knight wasn’t worthy of Arthur’s devotion ( ... )

"That they do..." He would know all about old grudges, still bearing the mental marks of their mothers' grudge against his father along with quite a few others. There would always be a part of him that blamed Lancelot for his brothers' deaths, but in his mind the overwhelming loathing he felt towards the other knight was tied into the complicated mess of emotions he felt towards his father. He never could understand what bonded his father and Lancelot ( ... )

His thoughts could have turned dark indeed, consumed over questions which had remained unanswered before his death or that he had lacked the courage to ask then. The present conversation was dark enough and he didn’t feel like bothering with anything else. Physically, Gawain shook his head, like the action would pull those thoughts away. It was almost comical, really, especially for someone usually serious and business like ( ... )

For Mordred, his thoughts were usually far darker than he let on regardless of how hard he tried to divert them towards more pleasant things. He considered it the curse of an overactive mind in that he frequently attempted to figure out what could have been even to the point of over-thinking it. Had he known that Gawain had similar thoughts it might have helped him identify with the brother who he felt had forsaken him ( ... )
