Of course you didn't. But really, would it be called LOOTING anywhere else when the fucking city is underwater? Who would be STEALING WET SHIT and what would they do with it??? Wait a month for it to dry? I mean, honestly.
Not angry at you, just angry at the bullshit that continues to come out of that city and colors (pun intended) the way people continue to ignore the problems of the poor Black people, i.e. the majority, who live there. Correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as I know, the city has never offered any kind of free transportation for people in the event of such an emergency. I'm thinking free mass bussing with a predetermined departure point, like Toolame does for its students. Would that be so hard to coordinate?
When I was watching the footage of the people trying to get into the Superdome, I wasn't shocked (but horrified nonetheless) at the demographic waiting to get in. I knew when the storm hit that the economically depressed would suffer the hardest hit from the storm and thought of all the times they've reported, say, $10 million for trenches to be dug. And we ALL KNOW they pocketed more than half of that because it doesn't cost that much to dig holes around the Clearview interchange.
Sadly, this hurricane won't change anything. It will only go to line the pockets of those already full when the town needs to be rebuilt.
Corrupt politicians, an extreme divide between the rich and poor, and a population of others that turn a blind eye.
And no: the only free transportation out I saw was one for Tulane students. Who likely didn't need it, by and large.
The most horrible, horrible things ever--the reporters could hear people in their homes yelling to get out. Just....I can't watch anymore.
Ok, thank you for that--I was just having this conversation! Why is it called "looting" when people are getting food? Food isn't loot--food is survival. And it's not like anyone has the option of just scubaing their way to the kitchen for a snack!
"Many of whom are probably people who didn't have transportation and couldn't afford to leave the city and are trying to survive as best they can."
Exactly. Dh and I were talking about that last night. Why the fuck is being poor a criminal act in this contry? WHO THE FUCK CARES IS SOMEONE TAKES SOME DIET PEPSI! What the hell? I mean really, is the Pepsi company going to go bankrupt if someone makes off with some damp pop? I don't think so. >:/
I don't know about the veracity of the reports, but as of yesterday afternoon some guy was staying in his house because he said the police were arresting and shooting "looters." I don't remember who, check out , it was someone there, I think. I'm not sure if he was referring to NOLA cops (I hope you're right many would turn a blind eye) or military.
I understand the authorities can't endorse "looting," but I'm reading accounts from regular people. There's such a level of fear of the poor Black people who live there that these folks automatically consider what they're doing to survive "looting." That's what I'm talking about is problematic. Would they call it looting if it were white people doing it? I highly doubt it. They'd call it trying to survive.
As far as the ATM "ravaging," which I'll also put into quotes as it was probably an incident or two someone witnessed and blew out of proportion, don't the police have better things to do right now, like oh I dunno, rescuing people?
