As far as character creation goes I usually start with a sketch. I just start drawing and see where it goes. Then based on their personality and colors I'll give them a name. After that it's pretty much like putting a puzzle together. You just have to see where they fit.

It differs for everyone. Characters just kind of come to me all the time. I have way too many. :c

Usually one character trait pops into my head (a man who collects the scraps of things left in library books, a woman who judges everyone's personality by the way they swim at the public pool) and then I start writing about that character to see who they turn out to be. It's always been my experience that it's better to start writing and see where things go, rather then to plan things extensively before hand.

But then again, I know it's different for everyone.
