BLUUUUH

It was past midnight. The full moon was high in the sky, giving the world a surreal glow. It was a night where someone could sleep with the lights off in complete ease. That someone was not Scott Everyman. The glow of the moonlight meant little to him with the harsh light of his computer monitor reflected in his glasses. His eyes scanned the screen in minute movements, while his hands danced across the keyboard expertly. The frenzied tick-tack of noises drowned out any signs of crickets. Scott had forfeited his right to sleep when he realized his philosophy paper was due that morning at ten a.m.

A six-page report on the philosophical revelations found in 2001: A Space Odyssey wasn't too much to ask for when he'd seen the movie several times by now. But, he hadn't expected he'd put it off for quite so long, otherwise he wouldn't be listening to Hal singing Daisy Bell in the middle of the night. The hairs on the back of his neck were still standing up. Hell, it was his own fault for picking the movie. He could have easily used the Matrix like the rest of the class. But, bullshitting was bullshitting in his mind and he'd decided it might as well have been about a movie without Keanu Reeves in it.

After a few more moments of typing, Scott leaned back in his chair and pushed his glasses past his brow line so he could rub his eyes. The words were beginning to blur a bit and he was getting a head ache. He wondered if he should call a quits for the night. He could always wake up early and he was at the four page point. Hie eyesight was bad enough on it's own. He didn't need to develop cataracts as well.

Scott saved his paper and turned off his monitor, plummeting the room in blissful darkness. Leaning his sore neck over the back of his computer chair, Scott pressed the butt of his palms against his closed eyes, willing the colors behind his eyelids to stop the burning in his eyes. He watched the blue and purple lights fizz and fade from his sight, wondering if he could make the four feet to his bed. It was only Wednesday and he'd already had to pull four all-nighters to study for his midterms. The paper was the least of his worries, so, naturally, he'd forgotten all about it and thought he'd had a free night. No such luck.

I managed a whopping three pages of that last year, but a lot of shit was going on at the time, so whatever. Scott Everyman is basically the best name ever. Seriously, though, I have no idea what I'm doing. My brain is too caught up with other peeps fictional characters to even begin to come up with my own.

How do you guys come up with characters in the first place? Is it a pre-planned thing, a brainstorming session with someone else, or do you just write and see where it takes you? I'd really like to know so I can have a general idea where to start.

It probably doesn't help that I look at everything I create with disdain, but I'm trying to work past that.

nano, polite inquiry
