One day I'm going to teach. I will, in addition to general geologic facts, seek to impart an understanding that sentences such as "The Arctic is melting at a rate which is twice as fast as the rest of the earth." are absurd.

Not just hot enough to make it melt, but hot enough that it is melting twice as fast as the rest of the Earth. I suspect that this will result in a pancake effect as the poles melt toward the equator...

You should probably introduce this concept in class and see if anyone is quick enough to realize that it's ridiculous. It would at least be a laugh for you.
