The umbrella stand was a piece of whimsy, subconsciously inspired by Katherine Mansfield's comment on Forster and Howard's End. (She suspected that EMF knew so little about m/f sex that she wasn't sure whether Leonard Bast had got Helena pregnant by himself or by 'his fatal forgotten umbrella'.)
