I know that on a 'first to know' basis I'm always last, so excuse me if this is old news.
I didn't realise I lived within 20 odd miles of the frigate USS Chesapeake. Or what's left of her.
She was taken prize by the Shannon, used in the service while her lines were taken/capabilities assessed then became a store ship. She was eventually broken up and the timbers used to build
the mill.
I was there yesterday, taking pictures and coming over all unnecessary at the sight of the timbers. They still show the rebates where things like bulkheads fitted in and the marks the shipwrights made to show what went where.
