I know that on a 'first to know' basis I'm always last, so excuse me if this is old news.

I didn't realise I lived within 20 odd miles of the frigate USS Chesapeake. Or what's left of her.

Oh, cripes, I thought you knew about this -- a Portsmouthian friend told me I had to see it while I was down south! It is absolutely gorgeous, and I am green with envy :) (shipwrights' marks...*swoons*...) She's well gorgeous.

And did you get to see it? If not it's a shame twice over as it's only ten minutes from Fort nelson where we went...

No -- I'll have to get down to Pompey another time to see it. Woe. Horror. Woe again ;)

Oh yes. It's open any day bar Monday and they seemed non-plussed at me wanting to take piccies. Sounds like an excuse for an outing...

Oh wow! Wish I'd known when we were there last. I remember POB's depiction of the battle in The Fortune of War, which I gather was pretty accurate, apart from Jack Aubrey lurking in the background. Thanks for posting this.

My pleasure. Yes, I almost had to pinch myself thinking I was that close to history and to JA, too. Shame Hornblower never had anything to do with her.

I'm always amazed at how much I don't know or am oblivious to. It's at Wickham (I've restored the link in the entry, which seems to have gone wrong).

What an extraordinary survival. Thanks for sharing this with us! I'll look forward to looking up more info about the Chesapeake and Mill later.

Isn't it amazing? And if I hadn't read an article in a magzine at the hairdresser's I'd have been none the wiser.

Fascinating, really fascinating! And thanks for fixing the link btw :) Wonder how many other buildings around the country are constructed from bits and bobs of old warships?

I'm such a drip, missed out all the http bit on the link first time.

There must be other examples as they sold the timber off but this is supposed to be about the best. American visitors used to make a point of going there.
