Indeed,

I have been doing the fannish thing for, gods help me, more than 40 years. The slash thing I've done since...um. 1979? That sounds right. I started with K/S. Spock, you know, and I adored Spock for years before I found fandom. One of the canon/fanon words Spock used was "Indeed." A lot. Now the problem with this is, all of the sudden I am ( Read more... )

"Yes, indeed, most admirable," said Snape in a bored voice. HBP

I only searched the last three books, but JKR uses it frequently for other characters, especially Voldemart, he uses it a number of times in OotP.

"Indeed?" said Snape. "You have a habit of turning up in unexpected
places, Potter, and you are very rarely there for no good reason.... PoA

Dumbledore uses indeed at least five times in each book. Moody (Crouch), Dobby, Hagrid and Trelawney use it. I think we've got to face it, it's canon, although Snape isn't the most frequent user by far.

Oooh, interesting. Just the once in 3 books? I feel like my instincts were right, then. I don't think that having Voldemort say it would toss me out of the story the way it does with Snape. Although come to think of it, I don't read all that many stories where Voldemort has much to say, so I'm pretty safe even if the fans did switch to making it his byword instead of Snape's.

Thank you for looking that up!

I associate "Indeed" more with Norrington from POTC than Spock, although I can see your point.
It doesn't disrupt stories for me though.

My first fandom crush was Zorro, the TV series from the 50s.
Gad, I'm so oooollllddddd!.

I know what you mean--even when it's not dialog, sometimes the Spocking up of Snape gets weird. I've read stories where he temples his fingers and even where he's described as cool and logical. Have they read the same books we have?

Weird, indeed. Maybe it is unconscious? I have to say, I suppose Snape must, as a spy, have to be cool and logical sometimes. But I think of him more as stomping around in a snit. It's the billowing cape/robes thing, I suppose.

The absolutely best Indeed story I've ever read is a Snarry fanfic called Whispers of Intent by Tira Nog. I've read it 5 times. After you read that, I doubt if you'll ever think of Spock again when you read a Snape fic. Submissive Bottom!Snape now completely owns the word. http://www.walkingtheplank.org/archive/viewstory.php?sid=1057&chapter=1
