Splendid, as I anticipated it would be. Your authorial note raised a point I have considered myself: you say that in his self-awareness, Erik sounds like Kay's Erik. To an extent, yes, but I think that's almost inevitable. Writing internal dialogue for Leroux's Erik is damn near impossible since the man was a complete nutjob. The only inner life you can give him that is lucid does tend to be, given what we know of his mind, analytical and self-aware - which always reminds one of Kay. The few times I've written Erik from a first-person POV myself I've encountered the same issue, and done my best to leave him looking like Leroux on the outside even if his thoughts are themselves a little more ordered (and commenting on his own behaviour ( ... )

I'm not sure I'd do Erik first-person these days. I'm not sure. But it's one of the reasons for posting--a complete re-write, at this point, would mean a story different enough from this one that both might conceivably stand on their own.

So thank you kindly for your thoughts--very appreciated!

Revising it would have made it an entirely different story--I finally realized that (six years removed) when I got to the point where I knew I could write it "again" and probably publish them next to each other without anyone saying they were the same. If that makes sense.

Oh! I've never seen you write in first person before, so that was something cool I hadn't anticipated. It carries your writing very well. I have a real sense of this person despite not knowing who the hell he is apart from what i learned from your very helpful email, so that's a surefire check mark in the SUCCESS column, I think. ;)

Awesome! Will read the rest later. xxx

I don't think I'd make the same choice now, but it is interesting. Thanks for reading!
