muddled thoughts on the Star Trek movie

Okay, be honest: after my multiple demonstrations of crabbiness re: remakes, adaptations, Hollywood, and general messing with my stuff, how many of you thought I'd hate it ( Read more... )

Yea yea yea! I'm so glad that you like it. I don't know when I'll get to see it (I might have to wait for DVD), but I had a lot of concerns. But considering your high standards for films and love of TOS, I feel confident that I'll be able to enjoy it. :)

I, too, am fairly confident that you will. Let me know!

Oh, I'm sure I'll be squeeing like a crazy person. At least, it's likely probable.

Whooo! I was actually afraid you'd hate it. I'll be honest, I had a lot of reservations, but this movie knocked them down--especially because I kept seeing all the little shout-outs they made to old episodes and movies.

Though the portrayal I loved best was Karl Urban's McCoy, I loved everybody, I admit it. No, Pine isn't Shatner, but Pine did really well considering the baggage that comes with playing such a loved character. And...Anton Yelchin is such an adorable Chekov.

...damn. I don't have a Trek icon for LJ. BAD SARAH.

In any case, my thoughts on the movie are rather muddled because I just keep thinking of new things I liked. That, and I'm running into people who have never before been fans of Star Trek that have seen it and now are expressing an interest in getting into the series. That puts a HUGE smile on my face.

But, yeah, glad you liked it. :)

I had reservations, too, and obviously I wouldn't be slow to express them if they'd come true. McCoy was adorable, as was Chekov--a character I never warmed to in the series, either, because he was such an obvious bone to throw the teenyboppers.

But yeah, I'm not exactly sure what to say in a more formal review, because I can't write it from a layman's viewpoint, and I'm aware that "as a movie" it probably has problems, but it definitely taps into our collective Star Trek mythos and I think that's what we're responding to, in large part. I do hope people get into TOS because of this, and don't reject it the way I might well have rejected this.

To be honest, the stuff from the trailer was the WORST bit of the movie. I have no idea why we needed to see that kid. I guess Kirk is reckless? It was awful and way too "young Anakin" for me. So I don't feel too bad about my initial reluctance--what I was being shown, and the fact they thought it would attract me, was pretty poor.

I'm glad I was wrong.

"so maybe I should have stuck around"

You should have Ds9 rocks. Especially bashir/Garak*. Sorry I am going through a HUGE rewatch right now.

"One disappointment was Nimoy, who... didn't really seem to be playing Spock at all, which was sad."

I'm the complete opposite, after all the TOS Movies I think he was just where he needed to be. Also he looked GORGEOUS.

*I believe I now need a Garak/Bashir icon

I've toyed with a DS9 watch, from time to time, but it's a big commitment and I've got a lot on my docket.

I haven't watched the TOS films for years, and didn't like them much, so likely I'm just missing something. He didn't seem like Spock to me. Then again, the TOS movies don't seem like Trek to me.

I loved Star Trek, and I thought you'd probably like it, pretty much for the reasons stated. I'm also a Kirk fan, as I've always held there's a difference between "womanizing bastard" and "charming an a bit of a skank."

And I had never expected to find Bones or Scotty attractive...

Aha, yeah. The stuff that it added, that it let me add to the love? Was welcome.

And you're right, about the difference. Only the prevailing attitude I'd heard before I actually watched him was "womanizing bastard." The surprise was delightful.
