muddled thoughts on the Star Trek movie

Okay, be honest: after my multiple demonstrations of crabbiness re: remakes, adaptations, Hollywood, and general messing with my stuff, how many of you thought I'd hate it ( Read more... )

Mostly I thought you'd hate it because you said multiple times you thought you'd hate it. ;o) But I'm glad you didn't. It was funny, because I heard you being "convinced" in the theater--both you and Mr. Daroga laughed at that line and I was like, "huh, guess they don't think it's too bad after all ( ... )

I am hoping that this is somehow evidence of my ability to watch things and form opinions without my prejudices necessarily utterly shaping them. I mean, I don't think that I generally "convince" myself to hate stuff, even if I expect to. But I could be wrong.

I still feel funny--I think because a lot of the things I thought were going to be wrong with the film were actually still wrong.Yeah. There were lots of things I thought were still "not good movie" about it, and stuff that could have been more thoughtful in a re-do of the original, and stuff that could have been less "hey, people like explosions and slow-motion jumping." But one of the things that is most interesting to me about this is how, as I said last night, it's almost a shared mythology that we respond to in part because it has that weight behind it, even if the individual may not be all that schooled in the particulars ( ... )

It's funny; I've yet to hear anyone, even die-hards, hate on it. Which is interesting cnsidering plenty of people have "problems" with it. I'm glad you liked it.

We don't have TV, and while I was a total Trekker back in college, I sort of lost interest after a certain number of seasons of DS9 (although DH and I really enjoyed Enterprise, though it almost somehow didn't really feel like Trek, you know?), so I haven't seen any trailers for it. But looking at how the other movies have gone downhill the last few of 'em (and considering how much Kirk really annoys me lol-- the man I love to hate!! XD), I was not at all interested in this movie. I have to admit,t eh idea of a younger cast back in their Academy days sort of didn't really attract me either; I was afraid it would come out something like this (from Stargate's 200th episode, which, btw, was amazingly awesome), lol:

But then DH started to watch it on the computer, and my little boy wanted to see it too, and I sort of started to pay attention, and you know what? It was awesome!! I really did like it. I did have a few moments of, "But why didn't they just..?" (but then one almost always does), but it was great!! Spock was very well done ( ( ... )

I do think this is the best ST movie. That is probably sacrilege, but I never enjoyed them, even the TOS ones. So I'm glad you got to see it, and I do hope you get a chance to see it in the theater! I think most things look better in one, but yeah space stuff is generally better bigger ( ... )
