Dree really missed whiskey, sometimes.

It wasn't that she hadn't gone without it, before, because she had. But, there was something about this time around that was significantly different.

She didn't even remember when she started drinking, but that's more a factor of how long she had been alive, as opposed to anything else. Her memory was long gone before she started drinking it away. But, with what she does remember, it's probably safe to say she can narrow it down to a few key events.

That isn't to say that she always had to have a drink nearby, or couldn't manage to go a few days without at least one glass. And, since the alcohol didn't really affect her - well, once her system acclimated to it, that is - she couldn't really be considered an alcoholic.

But, even Dree knew she had a drinking problem. She was just really good at hiding it.

Well, the alcohol-part, at least.

It was more than clear she had a drinking problem, simply by looking at all the half-filled glasses of water or cups of tea strewn about the place. But, she knew how that drinking problem had started.

That was a case of being back out of limbo. She couldn't get enough water, once she was 'on the outside'. But, as scattered as her mind was, even after all those years, Dree still couldn't always remember that she had a glass next to her.

Drinking whiskey always helped get her through the rough times, even if she never managed to suffer the discomfort of a hangover. And, while most would be glad to have that reaction to the drink, Dree hated it. She wanted to get so smashed that she wouldn't be able to remember days on end.

Unfortunately, all it ever seemed to do was make her remember.

But, now, even the smell of whiskey had her turned upside down. She'd tried to quit, for El, before the twins arrived. El couldn't drink, and it wasn't fair to be torturing her wife like that. It hadn't been easy, especially when everything went to hell. And, since Dree couldn't drink her mood away, it got buried. She was a master at the after-effects of drinking with none of the drinking, which was actually a pretty nifty trick.

Not that it was one anyone would really want.

As things started to spiral further down - or, as her shrink called it: the crack - Dree knew something had to give. So, she got a regiment of medications to try and balance her out; alcohol was on the No-go list; and she had to learn to deal with her emotions day-to-day, just like everyone else.

The hardest part had been when she had run out of medication, and her family was lost. It took everything she had to not fall to pieces but, somehow, Dree managed to stay upright. She may have been leaning a little hard to starboard, but she managed.

And, just when anyone would have thrown in the towel and downed a bottle, Dree stayed upright. Well, she didn't have much of a choice, as she was now pregnant. Now, she had to keep herself centered without the help of her beloved whiskey or the medications that were keeping her balanced.

One of the first things she had wanted to do, once the baby was born, was to sit back and finish off an entire bottle, simply for old time's sake. But, she still needed to wait until enough time had passed so that little Charlie could be fed. Once he was on solid foods and regular milk, she had a date.

Interestingly, when that time came, Dree found that as much as she wanted to sit back with that bottle of whiskey, to reacquaint with her dear, long-lost friend...

She wasn't all that thirsty.
