There is a saying that the way to a man's heart is through his stomach. Some women were well-versed in this saying, and some were even better versed in it.
It had taken Adora Cain many, many years to manage to cook more than family dinner. But, as the annuals progressed, her recipes were tweaked here and there, and her skills in the kitchen surpassed even the most skilled chefs in the Outer Zone.
Having something to focus on also helped Adora cope with her immortality. Having nothing but time on her hands meant that Adora had time to get recipes right, if not better. Adding a little more cream to this one, or a little less spice to that one, Adora's skills in the kitchen led her to opening her own bakery.
By then, she was answering to Liz Talbot, and as hectic as her life was, she loved every moment of it. The most popular item for sale in the bakery was a chocolate cake baked and served in a coffee mug. It had been concocted as a fundraising event for Central High, and turned out to be the greatest invention the Zone had ever seen.
As much as she had tried to perfect the recipe for other flavors of cake, only the chocolate had ever worked. That didn't stop her from making variations of the cakes - cupcakes were her specialty - but the mug cake was always her favorite. Good days or bad, with a scoop of ice cream or without, it was just the right amount of cake to make any day better.
Now, many annuals later, Adora was answering to Dree, and while she wasn't baking for the people of the Zone, she was cooking for her family. After everything she'd been through, the kitchen remained her 'happy place'. She was back to experimenting with recipes, making messes with the kids, and producing decadent desserts for the adults.
One particular evening, Dree was in the kitchen with Wyatt, who was using the large dining room table for paperwork. While he worked, Dree was preparing treats for Max to take to school. Unfortunately, habit had won out, and she had managed to make six different flavors of cupcake, with six different icings.
And, as Wyatt was a captive audience - in a manner of speaking - she kept making him try the completed cupcakes, to make sure they were actually edible. Well, halfway through the second batch, she'd called him over to help stir the batter, and he hadn't yet gone back to the paperwork.
Now, he sat on one side of the counter while she stood on the other. "Okay," Dree said as she pulled a cupcake from the tray. "Last one." Her tongue stuck out slightly as she slathered some frosting onto the top of the still-warm cupcake with the spatula.
Wyatt let out a skeptical huff as he eyed her, but it didn't stop him from reaching for the cupcake. "You really are trying to make sure my pants never fit," he said, though it didn't stop him. At the look on her face, Wyatt smirked. She tried not to look at him, as the guilt was written all over her face. Wyatt's blue eyes sparkled as his smirk widened. "Aren't you?"
