They're leaving Laethriel in less than an hour, heading back out into the blackness of space. And, while he should be on the shuttle, Trey's digging through a box in a closet. He isn't sure why he needs to find it at that very moment, but he knows it's important.

Most of the boxes in this closet are full of items that belonged to his mother; some of the items are his. He never really questioned why his mother had a house on the beach, when the family lived inland. But, after her death, the house became his, as well as everything in it.

Maybe she knew that he wouldn't stay at the ranch. Maybe she knew the rift between her son and her husband would never be closed.

It takes another few minutes of searching through two more boxes, but Trey finds his prize. A moment later, just as he's putting the boxes back on the shelf, his communicator beeps and they're calling him back to the ship.

ozozozozozo

Three weeks later, after everyone else has poked, prodded and otherwise ogled the tiny baby boy - who's only been with them for about fifteen minutes - Trey moves in to get a look at his son. His wife is exhausted, and fighting to keep her eyes open, so that she doesn't lose site of the infant.

Leaning over the small bassinet, Trey looks down and smiles, then places a raggedy old stuffed rabbit next to his son. "This is Rabbit, Max," he says in a low tone. "He's gonna keep you safe while Mommy takes a nap."
