i'm going through a little bit of a life crisis right now. colleges didn't go my way, at all. i'm having a hard time dealing with that fact. i got rejected by nearly every school i really wnated to go to save three where i was i was waitlisted - bowdoin, carleton, and wesleyan, all of which i would absolutely LOVE to go to. so i'm going to be ( Read more... )

i got in to ucsd, but it's notorious for having not-so-happy students. it's supposed to not be a very active campus (socially at least), and the study abroad programs are the same across teh UC system. the UC study abroad program is centered at UCSB, too

i'm not worried about my success in life, as i already said. that's the least of my worries. it's just a quesiton of getting that reward that i personally feel my work deserved

Well, I don't really know you (this is Elise, not Kim Chow.im definitely an lj stalker, which is sad cause im in collge) but I can relate to everything you're saying. last year I was rejected by every college I applied to except for 4 (applied to 15). Just like you, I worked really hard in high school and felt like it accounted for nothing. First of all, don't worry about the other suckas who got into the schools of their choice. They should be proud, yes, but they're not you. You don't need to pay any attention to them. All my friends from highschool are brilliant and ended up in great places, and I was in competition with them the whole time when it came to anything academic, particularly when it came to college. You can't compare yourself to anyone else. It will be shoved in your face time and time again, and it hurts. But never compare yourself to them. You know the work you did from highschool. You know that you're just as good as the rest. Don't underestimate the work you did or what you learned by the stupid college application ( ... )

thanks, i appreciate it

i'm both glad and sad that you had the same experience as me. glad that i can comiserate with you, but sad that others had/are going/will have to go through what i'm going through

my only issue is that a lot of the work i did in high school was the sole purpose for getting in to college. i'm very directed as far as what i'm interested in academically, and included with that there are subjects that i honestly do not like. that said, i still took AP US history (don't like us history0, physics (don't like most of science), and countless other courses to "appease" colleges. it's those classes that caused me a lot of the pain i had to go through in high school and that is why this all so painful

i know what you're saying. i know it's true. it's just hard

p.s. i just watched 16 candles for the first time 2 nights ago. i absolutely loved it

you really shouldnt worry at all...although you may not have gotten into your dream schools you could always transfer and be where you wanted to be from the begining. just to let you know ucsb is an amazing school that soooooooo many people only dream of getting into, you should only feel so fortunate. who knows you might end up absolutely loving it out there and you might not even remember wanting to go anywhere else. ucla is just a school, graduating from there isnt going to get you any further in life then graduating from ucsb. i know you will end up being happy wherever you are

even if lots of people dream of getting in to ucsb, i never dreamed in to getting in there. that's the thing. it's all relative to the person.

i worked to the point of extreme mental depression and constant mental/emotional breakdowns (especially last year) and i didn't get what i did it all for. that's teh bottom line

i missed you today and i'm really glad to hear you are finally taking your san francisco day. i was going to tell you things will be alright in the end and that you have the power to do what you'd like with your life, but you're two steps ahead of me because you know this already.

Sorry things didn't turn out like you wanted acting_amiga06 April 11 2006, 23:38:36 UTC
I hope you enjoyed your mental health day! A peaceful day every now and then to gain perspective is very important, look what it did for the Buddha! I trying to decide between UCSB and UCSD right now. I'm going to San Diego on Thursday and I already visited UCSB. They're both in the top 20 public universities in the country and I think we forget that because we live in California. I know that doesn't help because you weren't planning on going there, but hey, I might as well try. Look forward to your summer excursion and hope that maybe another school will come through. Sorry things suck right now. Here's an internet hug to make you smile- 0.
