Don't worry, I always do shallow shit like that. I don't know when the last time I wrote something halfway insightful in my journal was. I just don't do depth very well without getting self-conscious.

But haven't a lot of gays adopted the word "queer" in a positive way?

I think what bothers me is when straight people use it to refer to "the community." Like a8a4 mentioned, what if they had a class called "Nigger Studies?" I mean, black people have adopted the word in a positive way, but that doesn't make it right for white people to use that term.

Of course, if one of my gay friends called me a queer, even in the most joking/loving way, I'd probably tell them that it bothers me.

but there's no easy term to define people who are not "100% heterosexual and gender-assured".

And there's just no term that exists for people who deviate from typical "gender roles"

The sheer difficulty that I had in expressing what I was trying to say has convinced me of this alone...so maybe queer isn't the best option, but maybe the simplest, non-exclusive one

i agree with the queer thing. the word just doesn't sound postive. and i bet you could change it. Really if you went to them and they were like interviewing you and shit and you said. "queer studies? do you also offer a class called niger studies?"
i know the is a bad word but i think you can plainly see the correlation between the two. both are words that are meant to be hurtful towards the respective minority. and both have been adopted by said minority and tried to spin to be a positive. or atleast not a negative.
you should say to them "you should change the name of that particular class (suggestion mark)"

i dunno ... it's a very personal choice, but i have a lot of friends who like the word "queer." GLBT definitely does not cover all sexualities, which is perhaps one draw to the word queer ...

either that or GLBTTAAQQI (ect ect)
