I was at one of the college's rather antiquated computer labs with my stack of homework when all of a sudden, BEWP, darkness fell and the emergency lights came flickering on.

I know the BEWP sound you're referring to... but I keep hearing it as the longer BEEEEWWWWWWWWM sound the Death Star made when Obi Wan Kenobi powered off their tractor beam.

Also, in my former life as a hippie freak college student, we once had a multiple-day power failure. Turned out that the budget they'd had to replace the "10 year life expectancy" power cables was blown replacing a transformer instead, and after 21 years they just gave up the ghost. Total blackness in large sections of the campus for something like 3 days.
