Oh sure, I use tons of stuff to get stuff for the stuff.
MORE SERIOUSLY it pretty much depends. If I get an idea, then I may do research for it if I deem it necessary/if I feel like it, and sometimes I do base OCs off of characters I like from other shows/books/manga/etc., but it's not really consistent.
I often use derivative works as starting points for OCs or throwaway NPCs. Usually however this is merely a framework which I use to grow on, like the gelid coraline horror I am (my original fursona concept, do not steal). I usually combine several elements. To give an example for my SRT bros: My concept for Elenia Weyland, a supervillainess/mechanical engineering executive, derived in about equal parts from the kind of general 'haughty rich lady in her 40s with a slinky dress' arcthetype I tend to like playing, with a healthy admixture of the Monarch from Venture Bros./Hank Scorpio from that one episode of the Simpsons, and a thin layering of Objectivist rhetoric
