fic: And Bind Up Every Wandering Tress (Firefly, gen)

Nov 12, 2005 23:38

Personally, I blame iTunes for playing "You Cut Her Hair." So not what I meant to write today.

And Bind Up Every Wandering Tress
Firefly | River, Kaylee, Inara, Zoe | PG-13 | 1230 words | no spoilers
Like Rapunzel, she will let down her hair, and they can all climb inside her.

Fasten your hair with a golden pin, / And bind up every wandering tress; )

river, kaylee, zoe, inara, fic: firefly

Hurrah! I've been working my way through Firefly dvds recently and desperately wanting to read fic while trying to steer clear of movie spoilers. This one really hit the spot.

I especially liked the line: She wishes she could know Mal the way Kaylee does, that she could have that easy warmth and love with him, no complications, no harsh words or stinging tears. It so perfectly explains both the women's relationship with Mal and the sort of lack/fear/yearning that Inara might feel as an onlooker to Mal and Kaylee's friendship.

Beautiful. You have so much insight into these characters.

Thank you so much! I'm so glad you enjoyed it, and felt it was true to the characters.

And yeah, I think Inara probably does envy the simplicity and quiet depth of the Mal/Kaylee friendship.

This is a wonderful work, gentle and measured. The fact that it steadily weaves together and then untangles the threads that link the female side of the Firefly family is perfectly paced and suited to the hair metaphor itself. The counterpart to that imagery, the hands also says a lot about the characters, peeking into little corners of them that I hadn't found myself. A joy to read!

Mal braided her hair. Oh, god, I love that too, too much.

I *know*. It's just such a *Mal* thing to do. I'm sure he probably got beat up for it. Sigh.

Thank you!

Gorgeous. So many little insights. I love the part about Inara's jealousy of Kaylee and desire to protect river. And this:

When the fever broke, she'd woken to Mal's thin face, haunted eyes full of guarded joy at her recovery, and found her hair tied back in the sloppiest braid
she'd ever seen.

"I didn't let them cut it,"

Oh, oh, Mal. I'm smiling like an idiot, because it's the most perfect thing ever.

Thank you so much! And hee! Mal braiding her hair was pretty much the reason I wrote the whole story.

Loved it. I feel for Zoe, on the outside of the closeness the other women have. And the Mal & Zoe part was *perfect*.
