Since I'm at work (sigh), I haven't yet seen the new Rogue One trailer, but I'm excited. I mean, I still wish we could have Steela instead of Saw (and a Temuera Morrison-as-Rex cameo), but I'll take it.
Continuing on the theme, Darth Vader #25 makes for a strong wrap-up of the best of the new Star Wars comics. (

And also, he needs someone to give him direction. He couldn't have held/run the Empire on his own if he'd taken out Palpatine and tried to replace him and I think by the time of the OT, he's aware of that. He's always had someone to do the big picture thinking for him (e.g., Obi-Wan, Padme, Palpatine).
I also think that another big part of why Vader wouldn't have betrayed Palpatine is less that he was content and more that he was too depressed and filled with self-loathing to want to do anything but shut his brain off and do what he was told. Vader in ANH just does not care. Yeah, that's what I meant by "~okay" - it's the job that's in front of him so he's going to do it ( ... )

I can't believe that all these years, I never questioned why he hadn't tried to overthrow Palpatine, but what you've said makes perfect sense!

Writing from his POV has made me think a lot about why he does the things he does, and especially about how to reconcile Anakin with the Vader we see in the OT. The new Darth Vader comic helped too, even though he doesn't do a lot of talking and we don't get a lot of interiority from him.
