distanced from one, blind to the other

Instead of catching up on current tv on which I am behind, I spent most of Saturday rewatching The West Wing season 1. I stopped at "In Excelsis Deo" (I was headachy from crying afterwards) but I will get to "Celestial Navigation" - my favorite of the series and possibly one of the best tv episodes of all time - probably next weekend. And as much ( Read more... )

Celestial Navigation is amazing.

Season 5 finished me off as far as The West Wing goes. I do plan on rewatching from the start and actually getting to the end of the series, but the first time through season 5 was so dull I kind of gave up. Such a shame because everything before it was wonderful.

Season 5 is pretty terrible, as you can tell John Wells et al. are trying to figure out how to write the show, but I found the campaign stuff in seasons 6 and 7 well worth watching, if not quite the same show I fell in love with. (The White House stuff, otoh, not so much.)

Oh, and after 10 years I'm still in denial about John Spencer. So young :(

The original conception, as I understand it, was that it was about the White House staffers, but Rob Lowe was the star - hence why his name comes first in the credits, iirc - and Martin Sheen was only supposed to be in three or four episodes. And then they saw what they had and it became more about Bartlet and his staff.

If you haven't read the Oral History of the West Wing, I definitely recommend it.
