Yeah, every time I see Ant-Man I just cringe. I cringed before I knew anything about it, and I cringe now that I know. Just, why. How is it not Black Widow, I don't understand.

Meanwhile, I agree with all of this, despite not really knowing much about Carol Danvers or Black Panther, because I actually am totally on board for both those things. So much awesome potential, depending on casting. Let's hope they do better than DC with Wonder Woman, sigh. (I know, pre-judging, I know, but. It does not please me.)

Yeah, I have been pretending Ant-Man isn't happening since I heard about it.

I DON'T KNOW. Instead of giving RDJ a huge role in Cap 3, give some of the money to Scarlett Johansson and a Black Widow movie! I don't even need an origin story. Give us the story of her trying to find her new cover/discover who she is after Cap 2, with spyjinks!

Yeah, I'm not thrilled about the WW casting, and I thought Man of Steel and TDKR were both terrible movies, so I don't have a lot of hope for DC, but I think Chadwick Boseman is very charismatic - he was quite good in 42, which was a sadly staid biopic - and I feel like there are a handful of actresses who would make an awesome Carol.

A Carol Danvers Captain Marvel Movie!!!!! Black Panther Movie!!!! I can't quite believe it. There is so much awesome potential there. I don't know what my feelings about the Captain America: Civil War plan are - it could go so wrong, but if it doesn't follow the comics it could be very interesting.

I find him supremely unattractive

Oh, thank god. I thought I was the only one.

I had heard that Scarlett Johansen does want to do a BW movie, so why they're not going ahead with it baffles me.

You are not alone!

And yeah, I'd heard she did too, but maybe with the new baby she changed her mind? Because the other reasons - women-led superhero movies fail, Ike Perlmutter is too cheap to shell out for it, etc. - are bullshit. She's proved she can open a movie with mediocre material and lots of non-fannish, non-internet people would be into a BW movie.

I don't think it has anything to do with rustling up enough for her paycheck or whether or not she's available - if you look at the movies they've announced they are going "cosmic" with their storytelling and a BW spy-tale doesn't fit their plan (I actually think Ant-Man is a holdover from a very different plan for the MCU and now they are stuck with that movie so they are kind of whatever about it).

I don't particularly like this direction but if they are thinking long-term (which clearly they are) they have to move toward something new bc they can't keep the core Avengers cast for over a decade (almost two). It just isn't possible.

It generally sucks because I like the level of Cap 2, Iron Man 3, etc. would prefer to see movies about those types of conflicts but oh well. Marvel gots to Marvel, I guess.

Yeah, but, that's their choice. It's ALL their choice. They could easily have slipped a post-CATWS Black Widow movie into the timeline (though obviously her pregnancy has to be taken into account), but they've chosen not to.

>>the blonde lady from Vikings whose name I don't know<<

katheryn winnick! i love her on vikings. altho i don't know how tall she is - is carol supposed to be really tall? i don't know anything about her but i'm kinda stoked for her movie. altho why no black widow? come on, marvel, you can handle two female-led superhero movies. and the end of cap 2 leads BEAUTIFULLY into a black widow solo.

i thought the russos said cap 3 was going to be about steve and bucky, or at least that would be the emotional center. i mean, they're not just going to drop it, rdj or no.

Winnick is short but she's also a black belt and certified as a bodyguard, so I'd love to see her as Carol Danvers.

Another name I'd float for Doctor Strange: Mark Ghanime. He's in Helix on SyFy (ugh, having to spell it that way kills me), and he def has the hotness to make me happy: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2419177/?ref_=nv_sr_2
Otherwise, I'd want Siddig. With all the stupid shit going on these days, I'd really like to see an Arab actor snag that role.

We are beyond overdue for a Black Widow movie.

I did not know that! But that makes me think she'd be even cooler as Carol!

Another name I'd float for Doctor Strange: Mark Ghanime.

He is very attractive, but he seems kind of young for the part? Alexander Siddig is my first choice, but I am open Oded Fehr or Ken Watanabe. Last night, I saw someone mention Tony Leung. Can you imagine how cool that would be?

We are beyond overdue for a Black Widow movie.

Seriously!

no shit! that is so fucking cool. no wonder her viking ass-kicking looks so good and so effortless.

i admit i know nothing about doctor strange, but mark ghanime played one of the very few characters i liked on helix, which is a point in his favor. also, cute. and it's not like we don't have talented arab/middle eastern actors kicking around hollywood....

I am in fact a big Cumberwaffle fan, but... I was also very frustrated by him being cast as Khan, and after the sequence of Hawking-Sherlock-Khan-Turing I'd like us not to turn to him so quickly, and to consider more nonwhite folks, for any role where "this dude is cerebral" is part of the character description ( ... )

And also where there's a ton of racism in the original version. Like, Stephen Strange going to some ersatz Marvel Asian country to become the Sorcerer Supreme is somewhat less sketchy if he's Japanese-American, or what have you. (See also: Danny Rand.)

As to the Captain Marvel movie, I'm very very excited, and I'm really hoping that in the NEXT five years our number of woman-led and POC-led films will continue to rise, but only one of each in the coming 5 years is going to be _well_ behind what the younger fan base wants and expects to see in terms of diversity. That having been said, there are good odds that our yelling loudly about representation on the internet influenced these announcements somewhat, so I see every reason to continue yelling loudly. Yes, on both counts. I mean, the fact that DC went with Hal Jordan instead of John Stewart in Green Lantern continues to ( ... )

I'm totally about to steal my own comment and post it over on Tumblr. Cuz I really want to respond to that critique in a way that expresses my respect for victims of US militarism, while acknowledging my own feelings of inadequacy at never having served. (Which, having grown up in the midwest where the service academies were a major Way Out, I have.)
