I stayed up last night until they announced that Romney had called Obama to concede and that he'd be giving his own concession speech, which allegedly had not been prepared ahead of time, so absurdly confident of victory was he. He tempted the wrath of the whatever from high atop the thing, and it struck him down. Whew ( Read more... )

I feel the need for a West Wing marathon.

Here's a random question. I know you like makeup. (So do I!) What are you favorite places to shop for it, and what are your favorite brands?

It might be time for a WW marathon, you're right!

I mostly shop at Sephora for it now, since there is one in my neighborhood. I used to love to go to Bloomingdale's and wander through their makeup section, too.

I am very fond of Clinique and MAC, though I do occasionally pick up other brands if I like a color (all of my lipstick tends to be the same color, which is kind of ridiculous when I get home and realize I've just bought basically the same shade from a different company; I've tried to diversify recently, with decent results). I mostly only wear lipstick these days, and those seem to be my go-tos, though I also really like Buxom and Fresh for lipgloss that isn't too sticky and unpleasant.

I love Sephora. I went there for the first time this past summer (we didn't have one near where I lived in the Midwest, or even here in Maryland). So much fun. I actually just got a new Clinique lipstick: Dubonnet, which I love.

I'm really fond of Clinique's Plum Brandy and Goodness Grapecious. I didn't realize Sephora wasn't a fully national chain. You can order online, though, to refill favorite colors. *g*

This: how relieved I feel

What is exactly that draws you to the Xander/Dean/Sokka types?

Huh, I wouldn't have put Dean in that category, as he's the hero of the show, whereas the other two are clearly sidekicks. And mostly it's that - the sidekick, the supporter, the one who doesn't have any power but their courage and heart and love of the hero - Xander, Ron, Sokka - those types always tend to be my favorite, possibly because I find them easiest to identify with. The level of snark doesn't hurt either.

Who is that in your icon? She's sitting almost exactly like Renee Montoya in that one picture
of all the DC women.

Also: YES. RELIEF.

That's Allison Janney, who played CJ Cregg on The West Wing!

Well, actually, this is rather trivial, but I just started frequenting Sephora, so I'm curious -- what brands are your favorites, and why? I remember you talking about nail polish colors in the past, but not much lately.

For nail polish, I prefer to get professional pedicures, since it's so much neater and it's a nice way to pamper myself once every month or so during warmer weather. I really like OPI's Yodel Me On My Cell and Yoga ta Get This Blue, as well as Not Really a Waitress, Lincoln Park After Dark, and Black Cherry Chutney. (Sadly, the names they use for these colors at Sephora is different, e.g., Yoga ta Get This Blue is called Opening Night in the Sephora by OPI line, and Yodel Me On My Cell is Teal We Meet Again at Sephora.)

I also have a fondness for the colors they use in French manicures - Ballet Slippers, Parisian Pink - like that. I believe those are usually Esse.

Meme time!

Hmm...well, I'm always fasicnated by the differences between different places, and I've never been to America, so: What's your favourite thing that's unique/special about the area in which you live (you can interpret that as widely or narrowly as you like)? Or, conversely, what's something that you've seen in your travels/heard about/read about that you don't have where you live, but wish you did?

I live in Manhattan, so my favorite thing that's unique about where I live is everything. I mean, in the sense that there are so many possibilities when you walk out the door - I could go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art or the Guggenheim or Central Park or any of a hundred restaurants or bars, and that's just within walking distance of my apartment. The subway and buses (when they are running) mean I can go nearly anywhere else in the city.

I wish New York City were cleaner; every time I go to another city, I'm amazed at how clean it is. *g*
