I'm glad he was boring instead of arrogant? I used to love to listen to his process. As the years wore on and he got more famous, mostly I just wanted him to STFU. I was ready to bet he'd be completely unbearable wrt Avengers, considering, so I'm just happy to be proven wrong. That said, if I never hear him interviewed about anything ever again, I am totally okay with that too.
He didn't ping me the way he usually does, as pretentious, arrogant and he only let the faux self-deprecation out a little, not enough to make me turn it off, the way it usually does. I mean, as I said, I made it through, like, the first ten minutes of the Serenity commentary and less than that on Objects in Space, because I also want him to just STFU when he gets all precious about shit, but here he was a lot less grating, I thought.
That's a complaint I have about most DVD commentaries. They're almost always just a series of orgasms over the effects or cinematography, and of course, as a fangirl, I want to hear about the characters and story decisions. Sorry to hear that Joss didn't beat the curve!
I have to admit that I don't really care about Neal's daddy issues one way or the other, but I did really enjoy Peter trying to woo Neal back with freshly cleaned coffee.
Yeah, they need to do more with the writers and the actors, I think, and I'd had hopes because he wrote this, but he mostly wanted to talk about directing, which is not that interesting. On the upside, at least he wasn't as awful and pretentious as he usually is?

My benchmark for commentary tracks are the actors' tracks on Lord of the Rings, and Kiera Knightley and Jack Davenport's track on the first Pirates. Entertain me, people, and if you can reduce me to helpless giggling, I'll love you forever. :-)
This is... not that. It's basically a yawner with the occasional gem thrown in. On the plus side, it didn't make me want to claw my face off in rage, so maybe it balances out.
I'm enjoying the director's commentary, but this is my first real exposure to Joss so I think he hasn't had a chance to grate on me. And being a technical theatre person, I'm really interested in the discussion of 'why I chose this lens' and 'look at the lighting here!'. it floats my boat.
however, my DVD (I'm watching that right now because I didn't want to bother the husband to set up the blu-ray for me. I can't figure out how he wired it) is totally borked right at the Most Important Part (where the Hulk goes after Natasha) and has been bad ever since that point. Halting, skipping.... is anyone else having this issue? :(
Yeah, mine had problems right at the beginning, with Natasha in the warehouse. I took it out of the dvd player, wiped it down with a clean cloth, and put it back in and it was fine. I think the package was fucked up - mine had four discs but only two slots, so each slot had two discs packed together. Not optimal, imo.
thank you for the suggestion! will give it a try. (here's hoping, I really don't want to take it back + am a little worried Target will be out of the special edition I bought)
the only movie commentary i think i've ever listened to was tony curran and jason flemyng playing off each other for league of extraordinary gentlemen. it's really not a good movie but tony doesn't die so i put up with it. plus he does a sean connery impression during the commentary and he's FUNNY. is there, like, group actor commentary for the avengers? because i bet that would be really fun.
also, right there with you on the wc finale. peter admitting he wanted neal on his team because he loved him - and because neal wooed him all those years with cards and international phone calls - was really cute, as was the whole thing with the coffee, and i actually kinda liked the case, but the stuff with sam and neal's daddy issues? eh.
The best commentaries are for the LotR movies! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
And the first PotC movie has a good one, and, iirc, George Clooney & Brad Pitt do one together for the first Ocean's movie.
Avengers, sadly, does not have any actor commentaries, and Joss has his director hat firmly on, so there's not a whole lot of interesting stuff from a writing/character standpoint. A missed opportunity, I think.
