We lived there for three years. It was my husband's last duty station. He's in the Navy and worked at the Academy. We lived right across the street. What would you like to know?
Was there a lot of stuff for teenagers to do? Would someone who had spent time there growing up enjoy going back to visit? Also, is there a specific rank you need to teach at the Academy (I am pondering having Darcy's father teach there)?
That's exactly the kind of stuff I am looking for! I mean, I am just going to make stuff up, because mostly the story is going to take place over Christmas in her parents' house, but having stuff to do in town is important! And also giving Darcy something to natter about.
Wendy is skeptical when MM suggests going with undercover married, especially because she can't imagine having to actually live with him for a week, but he says, "The classics are classic for a reason, Dubbie! It's our best chance at catching these kidnapping cretins!" And it turns out he's right. Ida makes them IDs but first she has them say Mr. and Mrs. Hophead McStoner, and then Smokey and Mary Jane Weedy, but when MM threatens to cut off her online mahjong access, she makes them Clarence and Wendy Stone(r).
Hee! I am glad to hear it, as I currently am writing one fake dating story and planning another. Well, two, but the other one has amnesia complicating it. And god, now I really want to write this.
Mmm, it's like a very small college town. If you've got a car, then you're close to the beach and the mall, but without a car, you're basically restricted to some touristy shopping and quite a few bars and restaurants
( ... )
Is there cool stuff to do there if you're a teenager living there? Would you reminisce fondly if you'd spent time there growing up? Would you have awesome stories about sailors?
Hmm. You know, my whole problem with Annapolis is that I find it stupidly expensive, but it's definitely a walkable town, so I think teenagers would do well there. There's lots of shops and restaurants and coffee shops, and a few music places. Obviously I can't speak to what it was like 20 years ago or anything. It's a small town, but I feel like that makes it better for teenagers who might not have their own car
( ... )
And under the bench there's a waterproof journal for anyone to write things in. It's the cutest thing in the world, full of locals and tourists writing about their wonderful days, or missing people, or little kids drawing boats.
That is really cool! I might have to use that.
And thank you. That's exactly the kind of thing I need. I mean, I visited a few years ago when I was staying with friends in Baltimore, but my memory is kind of vague.
it sounds weird to me to call midshipmen (the students at the Academy) sailors.
I knew there was a specific word for it, but all I could think of was "cadets" and I know that's West Point so I went with sailors as kind of a generic term. *hands*
As for ranks of professors, they do have officers who do a tour there, but plenty of the professors are civilians from academia. If her dad teaches at the Academy and is an officer, they'd live on the grounds in provided housing. If he is a civilian, then not.

Ah, that's good to know.
