To be fair, they pop up in some perfectly respectable published fiction too. But I do tend to find them a bit of a headfuck, whether in amateur or published work.

My brother-in-law refers to my sister as "My wife" in conversation all the time, but my sister rarely calls him "My husband" when she talks about him. Notice these things - they can be facets of characterization when used well,

I am always astonished to learn that many people apparently are totally unaware that characters (and other people) refer to/address others differently in different contexts. How does anyone not know that? I mean, they totally do it themselves, and still, they seem to totally have no idea. ?!

People aren't very observant. You would think people who spend a lot of time reading and writing and thinking about texts would be, but a lot of 'em just aren't.
