I don't think S4 (or S5) made anyone hate Sam, I think it just gave a lot of lazy, irrational fans an excuse to justify the Sam-hate they've been not-so-subtly trying to hide since the end of S1...or maybe I'm just feeling really UGH THE WORLD SUCKS tonight. Oh well :P
You might be right - I think there was an opacity to Sam's motivations last season that had to mostly be inferred and a lot of people just didn't want to do the work. And I do recall seeing Sam hate in earlier seasons. It just makes me so sad.
You know, I had such high hopes after season 4, and this season has frankly been a big steaming pile of crap to me, mostly due to the lackadaisical quality of the writing. Watching this season unfold, for some reason I kept hearing my Dad's voice in my back of my mind going, "Sweetie, you can't polish a turd, so don't even try," and then I find I just can't even bring myself to analyze it.
Apparently he doesn't love Dean enough. Or something. I don't even know. I do know that I've run into a lot of really virulent Sam-hate over the years, and it always takes me aback and makes me sad. Why would you even watch a show where you hate one of the two lead characters?
Sam has done so wonderfully this season! He was learnt so much in Song Remains The Same, on fire in My Bloody Valentine, a bit slow to catch up but resolute during Dark Side of the Moon, the sensible one in 99 Problems, and pulled Dean's head out of his ass in Point of No Return.
Prophecy said Dean's the Righteous Man to end it, but Sam's been doing the hard work so far, and might make the big leap with no parachute.
He really has done some growing up this season. I mean, I feel for him, because he's clearly been seriously broken since Mystery Spot, and I think last season was the manifestation of that - he didn't go all OCD on his clothes and motel rooms, but he was certainly trying to control everything else by making himself into the blood-drinking, power-wielding superman who could save the world and not lose Dean in the process and instead... *pets him*
He's doing good on his road to redemption, I think, and will hopefully come out on top in his battle with Lucifer.

I can not imagine why anyone would hate Sam. He's always been awesome, even when he was screwing up. ♥
