anastasia screamed in vain

It never ever fails to amuse me that any mention of Joss Whedon on any of the entertainment blogs I read (which is not many, but it happens in places I only follow links to, as well) always devolves into a fight about how awesome/terrible Firefly & Serenity are. (see the comments on the news that Whedon is allegedly under consideration to direct Read more... )

i won't read your fic if, joss

I don't mind the installment posting if it's a really long story and the author is upfront about the posting schedule - i.e. 'this is a 100k fic and I'm posting 10k every other day until it's done' - because at least I know it's not going to be abandoned and I appreciate orderly posting. Dragging it out needlessly/excessively could be v annoying, though.

There are no excuses for Rich Text though. NONE.

I suppose if it were that long? And it was posted every day or every other day? But all too often it's "I'll post on Tuesdays and Thursdays until it's all posted" and it's, like, a 15K word story posted in 2K word installments. I want to tell them, "put the whole thing up and let me read it at my leisure."

There are no excuses for Rich Text though. NONE.

SO TRUE!

The only times I've been okay with authors posting finished fics one part at a time are when the point is to generate actual discussion. Maybe the fic is kind of experimental, maybe it's really long or dense (or both), maybe they're looking for concrit - I'm fine with all of that, as long as they post at least one chapter a day. Otherwise it's a hostage situation and I'm not even going to bother.

I've never seen anyone do it for those reasons. At least, not that it was stated explicitly. That I can recall, anyway.

I've bitched about 2 & 3 so many times I feel like a record skipping on a turntable sometimes.

Oh, believe me, it's not the first time I've complained about these things, or even the 100th. *snerk*

Listing the fandom in the subject header at the very least is 100% necessary. I tend to never do full names for any characters (and then there are situations where Angel from A:tS has no official real last name and Faith of BtVS only has a last name supplied outside of show canon) and yeah, there a million Sams and Jacks and Johns running around and some idea of which Sam or Jack or John can do wonders to knowing what the hell I'm reading.

Clarification is a beautiful thing.

You would think, but apparently not. I was reading friendsfriends the other day and came across a story that had the title and J/S in the subject line. And I was like, "Um, James/Sirius? Jean/Scott? Josh/Sam? John/Sam? Jack/Sawyer? Jack/Sam? WHO IS THIS STORY ABOUT?"

I get that people think they're in their own little corner of the internet and everybody knows what they mean, and possibly the summary might have made it clear, but I was just too annoyed to find out.

I agree with all of this. SO MUCH.

Also, I am entirely distracted by your title for this. WHY IS MY NAME ON YOUR POST? ;)

Heh. I almost always use lyrics from whatever song is on as the subject lines of my posts! That is why.
