building bomb shelters under your skin

I can't stop listening to Daylight by Matt & Kim. It's a little gem of pure pop perfection and I can't get enough. Thank you to whoever it was I snagged it from (I feel like it was probably hackthis, since so much of the music I end up loving comes from her).

As a bonus, since I uploaded it for my niece, If I Can't Change Your Mind by Sugar, which is one ( Read more... )

I love that Sam is geek enough to use Wedge Antilles as a fake name, because his storyline was pure Star Wars: the problem isn't that he was using his powers, it's that he was taking shortcuts to get stronger. That's the Dark Side, the quick and dirty way to power. Sam can potentially do a lot more than we saw in S4; he wasn't getting visions, he wasn't using TK, none of that. He was completely focused on the destructive side of his power. Sam was desperate and despairing and wanted power as quickly as possible because he wanted vengeance. And then Dean comes literally chosen by God, and I think a little bit of envy got thrown in.

The Dark Side isn't stronger, just faster and easier. And by definition you can't do good with it, no matter what your intentions because it twists and distorts; it promises you your heart's desire --- killing Lilith --- then perverts it.

If Sam can learn to use his power for good, he'll have to do it without using crutches like demon blood.

Since I don't believe in Hell and because Dean & Sam are fictional, I have zero problem holding Dean accountable for his actions while there - I don't blame him for caving, but I totally blame him for being there in the first place. It was his fault he was in Hell, it wasn't just something that randomly happened to him, poor boy. It was his choices that put him in that position, the same as Sam's choices put him in his ( ... )

I would compare how both Ruby and Castiel knew exactly which points to apply pressure to to make Sam and Dean more receptive to their various blandishments, and how Castiel screwed Dean over nearly as much as Ruby screwed Sam, but uh, that way lies madness.)

I honestly think Castiel screwed Dean far more than Ruby screw Sam. Ruby never tried to destroy Dean at any point. She needed Dean alive to use as bait during season 3 but during season 4, had Dean died or been hurt, it would only have helped Ruby's plan. She never actively worked against Dean, except to separate Sam from him. Castiel OTOH knew how far Dean would go for Sam, constantly dangled Sam as bait before Dean all the while planning to destroy Sam's psyche and soul. And he yet,HE is going to get all the accolades for being Dean's friend and switching sides at the last minute and really, only when it was too late to help.

I didn't see Sam's demon blood addiction as being analogous to drug addiction because of Ruby's reaction to his accusation that she poisoned him. It seems more like a psychological dependence which Ruby cultivated in order to make Sam depend on her and to drive a wedge between Sam and Dean. Unlike Sam, Ruby must've known that the angels were coming for Dean while he was in hell, so she needed an insurance policy to make sure Dean didn't pull Sam off track. Drinking demon blood is so sure to disgust and repel Dean that of course Sam is going to keep it secret, and that's a big part of the rift that opens up between the two brothers during S4.

Sam's "addict" symptons seem to be partly psychosomatic (he suffers withdrawl because he believes he's dependent on demon blood) and partly evidence of his mental breakdown. I thought Sam was very mentally ill throughout S4, and the difficulty Dean has in recognising and dealing with this compounds the problem. Cold Turkey would never, ever work, because you can't detoxify someone of their ( ... )
