every hero walks alone

Last night, I finished The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Díaz. What a fantastic read. Compelling, heartbreaking and hilarious, with a great narrative voice, a strong sense of place, and an epic tale of family tragedy. Plus, all the hardcore geek references that feel true and natural and not at all forced ( Read more... )

I'm glad you mentioned that article "Latchkey Hero". I had it open in a tab, but I decided I must have clicked the wrong link -- the numbering of the paragraphs made it look to me like I'd opened the footnotes and missed the article. So now I know I clicked the right link, and will make a stab at reading the article.

And yay refunds!!

Yeah, I don't know what's up with the paragraph numbers - maybe it's a style thing? but the article's an interesting read.

100 % agree with you about Dollhouse. I haven't read that script -- does it have the high standard of witty dialogue I expect from Joss in it? Also how Zoë of you not to be sanguine...ITA.

How bad are the canon issues in the SPN meta? I hate canon mistakes when one is being meta... also I do think the most interesting aspect of Dean is how much his bravado contradicts the fact he held the feminine role in the family much more than Sam (who is called a girl more often due to not fitting the blue collar masuclinity of the universe as much as Dean).

It doesn't have a high standard of witty dialogue, but it definitely sounds more like Joss than what's aired so far.

They're pretty small - she calls Carmen his wife instead of his girlfriend in WIaWSNB, and there's a second one that's slipping my mind now.

The dialogue thing is upsetting me the most, it's the one thing I thought Joss would never disappoint me on. Off to read SPN I can handle Carmen being mistaken as his wife (they were practically there in that verse).

Yeah, it really does not sound like a Joss show at all.

You're welcome! I thought it was interesting enough that even though I was interrupted by numerous things, I kept coming back to read it.

What's aired so far has been curiously unWhedonlike in its utter lack of wit and snappy dialogue, not to mention its lame predictability.

*nods*

If it hadn't been hyped as Whedon's triumphant return to TV I never would have known it was his show.

I know! It has been sadly lacking in numerous areas, but the wit and snappy dialogue most of all.
